During the past 8 years, I have been able to develop my teaching abilities that create a productive learning environment. Most recently, I worked as a Learning Facilitator at Darunsikkahalai Innovative School of Learning in Bangkok, Thailand, where I taught 9th and 10th grade students English and Social Studies using the Constructionism theory. In October 2017, I departed for Ziguinchor, Senegal to be an U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant for nine months. I assisted teachers in a secondary school to improve foreign students' English language abilities.I began my teaching career in 2011 as a chess teacher in Alabama. Since then, I completed English teacher training in Sierra Leone as a Peace Corps Volunteer, worked as a classroom aide in a special needs school, taught English and chess at a Moroccan youth center (using French), and volunteered as a chess coach. From my experiences, I understand the importance of being prepared but flexible when explaining concepts. I love to engage students by doing hands-on and engaging activities. I believe that encouragement and patience are essential for the student's success, something I strive for. My classroom techniques, which incorporate these skills, were effective enough that I received special recognition after six months of working at St. Coletta, a special needs school. The success of the activity depended on a great deal of preparation, innovation, engagement, enthusiasm, and encouragement. These skills are easily transferable to tutoring sessions to enrich the student's learning experience. I enjoy contributing to a student's learning and growth, and hope to do so as a Varsity tutor.

Hey! My name is Noah and I attend the University of Pennsylvania studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. As you can already see from the subjects I study and tutor, I have a wide array of interests and take great satisfaction in my work.In the past, I have tutored students for the SATs (I and II), AP exams, and in a wide range of subjects. I previously ran a writing center, helping students to improve their writing skills and revising college essays. I have been a parliamentary and policy debater for seven years and recently attended the World Universities Debating Championship in Bostwana, Africa.I am friendly, communicate well, and capable of adapting my teaching style to meet every student's needs. As a student and as a tutor, I understand the difficulties both face and look to build my tutoring style around my tutee. As a young tutor, I can also relate well to students. Having taken many of the same courses and exams only a few years ago, I understand what it takes to succeed and am willing to go the extra mile to make sure my students enjoy the same success.

I have been lucky enough to have many great experience so far in my life. I was a Korean translator in the US Army for eight years. After serving in the Army, I went to Riverside Community College and then San Diego State, where I majored in English and minored in Asian Studies. I've since earned a teaching credential and Master's in Education from National University, and worked as a high school English and Spanish teacher for most of 2001-2013. Outside of “work,” I like to travel and to learn foreign languages. I've traveled a fair bit in Asia and Europe, and hope see South America soon. I live near San Diego State University now, and have lived in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and various places around the country. I also love old cars and reading, especially historical fiction.I can tutor English, Spanish, Social Studies, Math (up through Algebra I), and standardized test preparation. I especially like tutoring Spanish, literature, and history. I really enjoy tutoring because I get to help people and I love learning! I believe that it is easiest to learn when we can make personal connections with what we are studying, so I seek out ways to connect the learning to your experiences. I also believe that learning is more effective when it is fun and when it is done in a multi-sensory manner, so I utilize multimedia, tactile learning, and music as part of my tutoring. I'll work hard to ensure you are learning the knowledge and skills to be successful!

I was in sports talk radio for eight years. I believe being successful comes down to knowing what you want and then knowing how to get it. That's why I believe a tutor/teacher/coach can be so important. They have been there themselves and want to pass on their knowledge and experience. If you can become clear on those two things, the learning and growth will come. It will come even faster with personalizing your working and applying it to your life.I was doubted in middle school and high school in even getting into college. I ended up doing fairly well on tests and got into a good college. I know what it's like being on both ends.Learning is about being open minded and realizing how much you don't know. With that attitude, work ethic and technique students can truly do better than they ever thought possible.
