During our first session, the student and I introduced ourselves, discussed the specific writing assignment that he is currently working on, and determined how we will review his work going forward. We decided to review by starting with the prompt and working our way through the paper paragraph by paragraph. Since it was our first session, I kept our dialogue focused on a few simple areas: the overall essay structure and individual sentence structure. While reviewing the first component - essay structure - I noticed that he had a solid story line in place. I proceeded by asking him to elaborate on certain details within the paper, and he complied. We then worked on putting the new information provided into writing and incorporating that writing into the existing material. We closed our first session by taking approximately 15 minutes to review the edited paper and ended by discussing what we had accomplished and what we still needed to work on. We agreed that we had given the paper a solid structure with interesting personal and academic angles, but still needed to work on several areas in terms of sentence structure, diction, and grammar.
