Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Emily in Auburn, WA
For the first hour of our session, we read a new book that was assigned in the student's lesson plan entitled "Me on the Map." It offered perspective using a bird's eye view of rooms, houses, streets, countries, and the world. After reading the book on her own, she drew a bird's eye view of her room. The next hour we practiced mental math and subtraction facts. She's quicker at giving the answers, which is great to hear. Our last hour was doing more writing practice. Her writing is improving. She just needs to practice outside of our sessions as well.

English Tutoring review by Julie in Auburn, WA
Today the student and I covered a Math review and reading comprehension. The student did well with math for the most part but I spent extra time reviewing graphs with him. While he is very strong with labeling and plotting points on a graph, he has some difficulty identifying what the end result on the graph means. He identifies the numerical pattern very well, so I spent some extra time reviewing what the numbers mean conceptually (e.g. an increase in 5 dollars made per week). The student was able to read the passage well but had some trouble when it came to answering questions. He was able to identify the main idea of the passage right away and struggled more with the smaller details. We went over several strategies for answering these types of questions and understanding the passage, such as process of elimination and finding where in the passage the detail in the question is written about and reading a sentence before and after it. I also made sure the student focused on what was written in the passage only, as opposed to using outside knowledge to answer the questions, since author opinion often comes into play. The student seemed comfortable with everything we went over and I will follow up next session to ensure that he is able to apply these strategies effectively.

English Tutoring review by Derek in Auburn, WA
Topics: Reading practice, reading comprehension, spelling practice, writing practice Progress: This session went very well. The student was able to tackle some difficult words and get through a Frog and Toad story with me, without a lot of frustration. I was most happy about his handwriting, which has improved a great deal. He is able to write extremely neatly for his age, which I believe will help him in the long run, to read his own writing. I am looking forward to the next session.

English Tutoring review by MaryEileen in Auburn, WA
The student continued to work on her autobiography assigned by her current teacher. Tonight, I took 10 pages worth of notes, as she said her ideas and thoughts out loud. We gathered enough material to write about this, her last week in fifth grade, which has included an all day fifth grade party at the park, her plans for the summer, and her ideas about moving to middle school next year. As she was orally reciting her ideas, I continued to encourage her to add detail, although she does a great deal of that already. When I left, she was in the process of putting her rough ideas down on her rough draft paper, using the notes we generated together. Each week, I am more and more impressed on how she is growing as a writer. She has some great ideas, understands story structure, plot, and character development, and the importance of including interesting details.

English Tutoring review by William in Auburn, WA
Today was a fine session. The student did well. He read one entire story from Frog and Toad, and he read through one story that emphasizes phonics. I noticed that he struggles with pronouncing words containing TH an SH. He also continues to work on blending words that end in -ED. With continued practice, these pronunciations should become second nature. We will continue to work on this.

English Tutoring review by Canterra in Auburn, WA
We went over the writing process and revising and editing. The student needed help with understanding how to make a strong thesis, and with a few revising and editing techniques. He is on a more advanced level than most eighth graders though. He had a great attitude and we discussed different writing strategies such as using the Oxford comma and listening to the way it sounds (checking for wordy phrases). I left him with a writing assignment (persuasive essay) and we did a few multiple-choice questions together to note where he is academically. He did very well with the beginning and intermediate levels, but made a 5/8 on the advanced level. We will work on that. He is a fantastic student!
