Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Beaverton, OR Trigonometry tutoring
In today's session, we covered sections from the student's current chapter in order to prepare him for his next exam. We started with calculations of rate of change, which then lead into computing linear equations given various information. We also discussed calculating linear regression lines using the calculator. Mainly, we reviewed each of the main topics presented in the section, and then he worked out exercises from his book in order to confirm his understanding. A lot of today's material was a review for him, so he was readily solving most of the exercises. We also talked about interpreting r, the correlation coefficient, as it tends to -1, 0, and 1. Before wrapping up, we planned for next session by looking over the final three sections that he will be reading. This way, I can prepare questions for review, and he can be ready with questions.

The student wanted a session to review the concepts he's learning currently. These concepts consisted of the inverse trig functions as well as the abstracted mapping of one-to-one, onto, and bijective functions. Explaining one-to-one (injective) and onto (surjective) was challenging, but these are difficult abstractions to understand to begin with. Towards the end of the session, he made some progress using the definitions I wrote down for him. All in all, he is progressing steadily and working through obstacles very responsibly.

The student worked on her current homework assignment focused on analytically solving trigonometric equations containing by using algebra, trig identities, inverse circular functions, and the unit circle with both restricted and non-restricted domains identifying when a trigonometric equation is undefined using a graphing calculator to find the zeros of trig equations. I demonstrated how to find the zeros of a function on the graphing calculator. This was technique was new to her, and she was excited to learn it, which again demonstrates her excellent attitude towards the material.

We spent most of our time on complex numbers, covering the cycle of i, what makes a function real or imaginary, and how the discriminant of a quadratic relates to the roots of a parabola. The student says her test on last session's material went well, and she once again brought good effort and a positive attitude to our session. She has a quiz on this material later this week, so I did not assign extra practice- she'll have plenty to do with her assigned review sheet and other studying.

The student worked on her trig homework using laws of sines and cosines, incorporating ideas of forces. She also worked her chemistry homework, on solubility and colligative properties. She seemed to have a good handle on individual steps and needed some guidance putting them all together. A good first session.

We reviewed for the student's quiz on exponential/logarithmic equations without a calculator. We went over methods for quickly factoring large numbers and rewriting the equations in simpler forms with equal bases. She is doing very well with the material.
