Student centered learning is the focus of my instruction. In my experience, a student's individual needs and personality drive instruction. Once an educator has identified the student's strengths and weaknesses, they can use the student's strengths to support their weaknesses. For the past thirty-three years, I have educated students ranging in age from five through adulthood, including those at the graduate level. I am a certified educator in Illinois, and hold a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Florida Southern College, and a Master of Arts in Reading Education from the University of South Florida. In addition to my graduate degrees, I have been trained as a reading coach to certified educators in reading instruction.To add to my professional credentials, I am a published author in association with Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society for educators, and I have been featured on the podcast channel entitled, New Teacher Talk on the topic of Virtual Tutoring.Literacy has become my passion in education. In working with students as a Varsity tutor for the past four years, I have been able to increase their reading and writing skills by two or three grade levels plus. Presently, I am experiencing success with students who are challenged in reading and writing because of issues with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. I also work with students who are at different verbal levels of communication. No matter where a student is in their educational development, once they have attained some level of proficiency in both reading and writing skills, they possess the tools of a self-learner.

The practical nature of these lessons provides an immediate benefit to the students by better preparing them to cope with the various issues that they may face in life, and therefore reinforcing their classroom learning experiences.I am willing to put in additional time and effort to help an individual student, including one-on-one instruction or additional material on a given subject or concept. I graduated from Blackburn College with my Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a focus on pre-health professions, minoring in Chemistry. My goal was to pursue a role in direct patient care before entering a graduate program to become a Physician Assistant. Upon graduating I began reflecting on what would truly fulfill me, this led me to take a step back from healthcare to explore various graduate programs surrounding biology and my love for English and writing. I may end up in research, fieldwork, or writing articles, the possibilities are endless! I began peer tutoring when I was earning my Associate's degree and fell in love with that student-tutor connection. I was not always proficient in school until I reached the collegiate level. My tutoring began at my Community College thus I was blessed with the opportunity to work with a range of students, starting with various ages, education levels, and differing learning styles. Helping a student reach an understanding of a subject or concept they previously struggled with is greatly rewarding. While I am most comfortable within the disciplines of Biology, focusing on Zoology, Cell Biology, and Human Anatomy & Physiology, my tutoring roots began with English, Literature, and Composition. I truly believe that there is no concept or subject that cannot be tackled by a student as long as they have the right resources, support and that their specific learning style(s) are of great focus. When I am not working I love spending my time in nature and around any animals, namely my dog Lincoln who is my best friend!

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Spanish from Grand Valley State University! I am currently getting a Master's of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I offer tutoring in any level of Spanish and for various Psychology topics!When I was studying abroad in Spain for a semester I tutored some kids in English by helping them learn grammar and work on improving their conversational English. I also tutored basic Spanish speaking skills for a 12 week program to help people feel comfortable communicating with others in Spanish. Learning Spanish not only helps you to be more competitive for jobs, but also helps connect you with more people! I love teaching languages because it's one more way people can learn how to communicate with others in a variety of settings and locations. I love seeing the moment when people go from learning no Spanish to being able to understand even a simple sentence. That acknowledgement and realization that they have learned something new is very inspiring for me!I want to help you learn the best way that works for you. I worked at Epic Systems for a year after undergrad to gain some real world work experience and gain knowledge of healthcare administration. In 2013, I started medical school at the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine. I am currently in my fourth year of school, and will be applying tointernal medicine residency programs in the fall. I find the most effective learning strategy is to understand the underlying concepts behind a subject, which facilitates the application of this knowledge to a wide range of novel problems in a testing environment. Additionally, by helping a student find a personal connection to the material, I can foster a passion for the subject that motivates independent learning.

I am currently a Master's in Education Candidate at Northwestern University, and will begin teaching high school biology in Chicago this upcoming fall. I completed my undergraduate degree at Northwestern University in 2019, majoring in both Biological Sciences (concentrating in Genetics and Genomics) and in German. One of my greatest passions in life involves teaching English and Spanish. I have dedicated my education and profession to becoming an expert in these languages and in teaching them. I received a bachelors degree from Brigham Young University where I double majored in Secondary Education (emphasis in English Language Arts) and in Spanish Studies. While studying at the university, I taught Spanish online as part of the universitys independent study program. After graduation, I taught seventh grade English for one year. I absolutely loved teaching, but left to be able to move to Chicago with my husband. Now, as my husband is attending the University of Chicago Law School, I hope to reach as many students as possible through tutoring.I believe that every student is unique and therefore deserves individual instruction. If I see that a lesson is not helping a student succeed, I immediately adapt that lesson. I am willing to put in all the work that is necessary for the benefit of the student. That being said, I also believe that a student has a responsibility to put in their best effort as well.Although I do love teaching English and Spanish, there are many other things I love to do.
