My name is Christian Myrick. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, USA to Christopher Myrick, a general contractor and Linda Myrick, a housewife. I attended Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia where I played alto saxophone in the renowned marching band and concert bands. I attained my high school diploma on May 18, 2014 with honors. During high school, English and Language Arts was my favorite subject and the subject in which I was the most proficient in and performed the best in. I have always loved to read. My favorite book in middle school has always been Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. This love for reading inspired me to start writing short stories, poems, and to begin my first novel in sixth grade. My current favorite novel is Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. Four years after graduating from high school on May 20, 2018, I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in English with a minor in History from Morehouse College. During my tenure at Morehouse, I served as the Vice President and eventually the Upsilon Nu Chapter President of Sigma Tau Delta International Honor Society. Being a member of Sigma Tau Delta afforded me the opportunity to present two of my original works of fiction at the annual Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in front of prominent scholars and students who study literature. Also during my undergraduate experience, I served as the Committee Chair of Membership for the Morehouse chapter of NAACP. I never abandoned my musical talents and roots because while serving in these positions, I have served as the lead saxophonist for several churches in the metro Atlanta area. Along with musical experience, I possess mentoring experience through a program called Hope Dealers Inc., which is specifically designed to benefit adolescent students and high school students in the South side of Chicago area. During the spring breaks of my sophomore and junior year of college, myself and fifteen other Men of Morehouse traveled to Chicago, Illinois to mentor and serve as a beacon of light to less privileged middle and high school students. The overarching goal is to "deal hope," which is just to provide them with some inspiration, counseling, wisdom, and tangible positive images of young black men. Along with this mentoring experience, I also possess experience teaching English and History high school students at a private school called BaSix Knowledge Academy. Serving in this position entailed reinforcing to ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students the concept of understanding how literary devices operate, the concept of assembling essays, the concept of properly analyzing and criticizing literature, and the concept of studying and analyzing history. Lastly, I have experience serving as a Professional English tutor for a summer program operated at Morehouse called Pre-Freshman Summer Enrichment. Serving as a Professional English tutor for the summer of 2017 and summer of 2018 entailed assisting incoming college freshman with the issues they encountered in their English composition courses. I taught them how to assemble essays on the college level, reinforced how to form and interpret literary analysis and how to approach literary criticism. Moreover, I possess a deep and immense passion for restructuring the narrative globally on the humanity, which in many ways is rooted in many dehumanizing ideologies such as racism, sexism, classicism, ageism, and misogyny. I believe that the production of literature and writing as a whole are two aspects that solidify the humanity of human beings because they address the damage these ideologies have done to humanity. This belief is the inspiration that produced my vested interest and passion for properly contextualizing and interpreting history, understanding language, reinforcing the significance and the beauty of literature, and teaching writing and literacy holistically. I also believe in the philosophy of structure because it avoids chaos. My love for reading and writing combined formed the foundation for my passion in reinforcing grammar techniques and essay structure. Overall, I believe that humanity as a whole needs to be restored by being reminded of the qualities and aspects of what makes a human being, which is why I have become proficient in teaching writing, history, and literature.
