Tutoring review by Gabriela in Martinsville, VA
During this session, I worked with the student's younger brother. We went over different types of angles such as obtuse, acute, and right angles. We did a couple of examples and then moved on to reviewing once again direct and inverse variation. He had a couple of homework problems and after a while he did really well. In the end of the session, I also looked over a couple of his other homework assignments. His mom mentioned that both students did well on a test and that the tutoring seems to be helping them.

It was good to see the student again. During this session, we went over some of his math questions. These questions concerned recursive sequences. We discussed and worked on problems disseminated by his teacher. After working on these, we spent a good deal of time reviewing thermodynamics. Most of his questions involved enthalpy, enthalpy of formation, calculation of evaporated water using the energy generated from the combustion of ethane, and the related stoichiometry necessary to solve such questions. The session was helpful for him. He is doing well. I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

Tutoring review by Kelie in Martinsville, VA
In Algebra today, we starting talking about polynomials. We defined monomials and polynomials, found degrees of expressions, and named expressions based on their degree and number of terms. We also discussed and practiced adding and subtracting polynomials. The student didn't have much issue with this. We restarted chapter 18 in science. Instead of having him read the chapter by himself, I went through the chapter and explained the individual concepts to him, and had him take notes on the most important things that I was saying. We covered why atoms bond, how they bond, electron dot diagrams, and the specifics of ionic and covalent bonds. I think we'll continue this approach.

Tutoring review by Alla in Martinsville, VA
We worked on a review sheet on factoring trinomials with a leading coefficient greater than 1. The student needed a little reminding but was able to factor with fluency. This skill will continue to be used in solving geometry problems throughout the year. We discussed several days' worth of HW, including: writing triangle congruence statements (and marking triangles to match pre-written statements) and writing if/then conditional statements and their converses. When we had extra time at the end of the session, we talked about concepts that will be covered later this week: triangle congruence conditions such as SSS, SAS, ASA, etc. The student was eager to learn ahead of the rest of the class, and enthusiastic throughout the session. She took a major assessment last week, so we will review those results at our next session.

Tutoring review by Emily in Martinsville, VA
We got through the first half of the student's review packet for Wednesday's final exam. She did very well with all the slope and line problems, but needs to work on remembering all the logic/ conditional statement vocab and the vocab for angle congruency. Speed also went pretty well, so I was pleased with how much we were able to get though. She needs to keep a lookout for tricky problems though; a couple had random angles thrown in to distract her from the relevant information.
