Tutoring review by Janiece in Holladay, UT
I went over the homework I left for the student which consisted of multiplying and dividing mixed numbers/fractions, and I circled the errors for her to correct. Upon re-correcting her work, I noticed a pattern starting to form that I wanted to address right away. I made it a point to clarify that if she chooses to change the division to multiplication and take the reciprocal, then she must multiply straight across and not cross-multiply, or she could just cross multiply - one or the other, not both. I then ran her through some geometry, having her find first the perimeter and then the area of a rectangle. I gave her a few problems on each calculation.

I had the student do addition and subtraction flashcards before we moved on to his workbook. He did very well on his flashcards and is showing much improvement. I set for him a goal to complete an entire worksheet of math problems, both front and back, before we played his addition and subtraction game. He did a good job finishing the worksheet and we had fifteen minutes to play the game.

We went over many topics in the student's college algebra course, including inequalities. The student had difficulty determining which way he was supposed to graph asymptotes and vertical and horizontal intercepts. I made him a worksheet covering these questions, and we will go over it at our next session. I also advised him to create his own practice tests by mixing up questions from the end of the chapters in the textbook and that he should practice as many questions as possible to improve his understanding.

We went over lessons and one quiz today on ratios/percents and setting up proportions. He had gone through a similar lesson independently between last week's session and today. For this session, we also went over concepts of cross-multiplying and solving for the unknown variable. I drilled on any relevant multiplication and long division. We went over concepts of dividing or multiplying by powers of 10, including with decimals. I assigned him to finish two other independent practice modules and the second quiz in the lesson.

This session, we covered mostly word problems and knowing how to write equations then using substitution to solve the system. The student always has a good attitude towards learning. We left planning on her taking her midterm sometime soon, so this will show her progress. I am very hopeful for her success on the exam.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Holladay, UT
We reviewed this week's homework packet. First, we discussed the Pythagorean theorem and how that can be manipulated. Then, we worked a lot with various simplification problems that required the use of different trig identities. Finally, we finished with a 'solve for theta' type problem in which we drew a triangle to help solve the problem. She worked with the white board and was very good at stopping and asking questions when she got stuck. She was very receptive to my input and we where able to get through a number of problems. Her biggest struggle is with little mistakes. By working with the white board, she was able to see her work in the 'big picture.' She was quicker to spot her mistakes and made less of them as the session went on. Overall, a wonderful first lesson!
