Recent Dallas Fort Worth Study Skills and Organization Tutoring Session Notes
Today the student and I focused on studying for his World History Test. We approached this through a variety of methods. We used flashcards and then literally talked about World History in today's vernacular so that the theories and stories felt more relevant to him. I also tested him on his geography knowledge of Central and South America. Finally, I worked with him through his study sheets/homework sheets and his teacher's study guide. This gave us a chance to work through the flashcards, rather than having to read all the text again.
Also, we spent time reviewing some of the Spanish words he had problems on during his test. We discussed how sometimes, not feeling confident about our knowledge of the information asked for on a test, can cause us to feel insecure and then guess our way through a test. By reviewing the words after the test, I explained to him it's easier for our brain to grasp them and memorize them.

We discussed a few strategies for writing today, and then moved on to study skills. We primarily focused on studying with flashcards. We practiced using them, and then discussed different ways that making flashcards could be useful in school. Next week, we are doing test-taking strategies.

The student and I reviewed his upcoming assignments and completed his Science HW. We also discuss proper planning for the rest of the weeks assignments and how best to organize his time to get everything complete with A quality effort.

The student and I started our session off by going through his school's homework site for each class and writing down all of the upcoming assignments. We discussed his plan of success for his upcoming geometry test and an upcoming paper. I had the student enter the dates of assignments into his calendar on his iPad so that he would not forget them. He completed an English assignment, worked on a computer class assignment, and studied for a chemistry quiz on elements.

The student is a very bright student who has issues with note taking and organization. We worked on using Cornell Notes as his method of note taking. It was decided that he would no longer study in the family room, but at the table in the living room. He has to dedicate at least one hour of studying to his literature class. He has agreed to go over notes taken in the class each day to make sure of understanding.
