Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kim in Dallas Fort Worth, TX
Today we reviewed angles. We discussed the different types of angles, and how to use a protractor to measure them. The student did well and was easily able to find the degree measure of angles with one horizontal ray. We also reviewed converting units. She had a little trouble at first but after a few practice problems she had a much better grasp. We also started to discuss graphs

We did place value, place value. We used a place value chart and chips, traded tens and hundreds, expanded form, standard, writing, reading, counting in various ways, mental math, adding with visual and manipulatives, building visuals of ten, money, counting, comparing... We packed every second of the time. Repetition, seeing it in various ways, hands on, are all key!

During today's session, the student and I worked on multiplying and dividing with decimals. When dealing with decimal factors in multiplication, we learned that our product must also have a decimal in it. We learned how and where to properly place the decimal within our product. We also reviewed fractions. We continued from last session - beginning with review on mixed numbers and improper fractions and how to convert between the two. We went over addition with like and unlike denominators. For fraction addition with unlike denominators, we learned how to determine the least common denominator. She is doing very well and showing great progress!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Lisa in Dallas Fort Worth, TX
We worked a lot on self generated oral responses, which he is improving in confidence. In reading, we identified details in nonfiction passages. We also worked on defining words using context clues as well as finding the right word from the sentence. In math, we worked on adding and subtracting with regrouping, where we fixed some of his computation errors. We also did mixed practice with focus on graphs, word problems, and elapsed time questions.

We worked on a harder set of fraction problems, focusing on addition and subtraction, but we also talked about how to multiply fractions. This was new for the student but she did really well and we will continue to work on multiplication.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Allison in Dallas Fort Worth, TX
I prepared a fun story about how she was stranded on an island, and she had to complete a variety of "challenges" in order to obtain the boat that would take her back home. The challenges consisted of word problems pertaining to multiplication and division. Towards the end of the session, I took out another activity I had brought to help her begin memorizing those facts. The student seemed to enjoy what I had prepared, and she told me that it was fun. I gave her a short assignment to do for homework, and she responded well to that, saying that she was happy to do it.
