The lifelong education of the developing human mind is vitally important to anyone with a vested interest in seeing individuals enjoy a happy, flourishing life, especially to those who are or wish to become teachers. I view studying and doing mathematical work as one of the greatest joys available to human beings in this context, and it is my role as a teacher to effectively, enthusiastically communicate the importance and beauty of math to my students as well as to foster their powers of critical and mathematical thinking. It is my professional hope that at the end of each tutoring session my students will have learned above all an abiding respect for reason: a lifelong conviction that they can understand reality and make sense of the world. However, a great teacher does much more than merely recite the content of his subject. I intend to encourage and motivate each one of my students to perform academically, at a level no less than their very best, yet there is much more to teaching than just making certain that students answer questions correctly on a test. A teacher must never lose sight of the idea that he is preparing his students to be successful no matter what endeavor they choose to pursue after graduation. Any chance I get to improve the futures of my students will be just as important to them, and to me, as learning mathematical ideas in the classroom.

I graduated from Harvard University in 2012 with a B.A. in Sociology and Government. During my time at Harvard, I tutored various social science courses. Immediately after my college graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught 3rd and 4th grade in a failing public school in Jackson, Mississippi. After I finished my two year commitment with TFA, I moved to Dallas. For my primary job, I currently work with Dallas ISD as a data analyst. I intend to eventually go back to get my Masters in Education and possibly Statistics to continue my career in education policy.I tutor pretty much all elementary and lower middle school subjects, as well as the subjects I tutored in college such as Public Speaking, Psychology and US History. I enjoy teaching test prep as well because I love easing students' test anxiety with strategy. As someone with dyslexia, I have a lot of strategies that help both student with and without learning disabilities remember information and understand it.Outside of education and work, I enjoy sailing, which I have both participated in and coached most of my life. I walked on to the Harvard varsity team my freshmen year and ended up racing at nationals a couple years later. Athletics were a huge part of my college experience so I know how hard but important balancing academics with athletics can be. This caused me to be very organized and disciplined with my study habits, which is definitely something I try to impart on my students. While I think that organization and discipline are important for learning, I also know that fun is essential. My main goal with my students is to foster a general love for learning that persists beyond a specific test, subject, or even my time with them.

Teaching has been a passion of mine since second grade, when my teacher saw something in me that no one else saw and lit that spark in me to fall in love with learning and education. Ever since then I've followed that passion into becoming an educator. I currently teach Pre-K and have experience teaching elementary school, working one-on-one with at-risk students, teaching english language learners, and tutoring students in different academic areas. Tutoring students gives me the chance to help a student who may be struggling, needs that extra motivation or wants to take the extra step. When working one-on-one with students I am able to keen in on their individual learning style and help them learn the best way they can.

I recently graduated from Rice University in Houston, TX, with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, Linguistics, and Asian Studies.I have been tutoring since January 2012. I enjoy working one-on-one with students, developing a connection with them and encouraging them to be the best they can be.My most commonly tutored subject is math, particularly Algebra 1. I have been tutoring math consistently during the school year for the past two years; my work has encompassed both homework coaching and exam review. So much of grade school math is learning to see connections between concepts and build on earlier work. When I help students with math, I guide them towards making connections and ensure that they understand how concepts are interrelated - the Pythagorean theorem and the distance formula, for instance. I believe that the best way to make sure a student remembers a theorem or formula is to teach them how and why it works. Therefore, whenever it is both possible and practical, I like to walk students through demonstrations of proofs to deepen their understanding and their ability to apply the theorem or formula in question. My second most commonly tutored subject is English, particularly grammar. As a linguistics major, I have a nuanced understanding of how grammar works and, further, of how to conceptualize it and explain it in terms that a student will understand. When a student is having difficulty with a grammatical concept, I begin by explaining it with reference to concepts that they do understand; I then guide them through creating example sentences with the concept until I am confident that they understand the concept and can identify and use it in all of the contexts in which it might appear.I also have experience tutoring writing, biology, ISEE vocabulary, general vocabulary, and French vocabulary and grammar (through the early intermediate level). In addition to this experience, I have a strong background in the social sciences, particularly anthropology, and in AP courses and tests relating to social studies. I earned a 5 on the AP exams in American Government, European History, Human Geography, US History, and World History, and I have insights on essay-writing techniques for these exams and their associated classes. Furthermore, while I have never tutored it, I have been certified as having Advanced Low proficiency in Hindi on the OPI scale, and I would be happy to tutor beginning Hindi, including the Devanagari script in which it is written. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy reading fiction, cooking, and playing board games.

I received my undergraduate degree from West Chester University. I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading. In May 2014, I earned my Master's Degree from Cabrini College in Elementary Education. I am certified in: Elementary Education (K-6), Middle School English (7-9) and Middle School Mathematics (7-9). Most of my teaching experience has been with prekindergarten, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade.I love helping my students achieve their own academic success! I take the time to learn about my students and their personal learning styles, needs and preferences. I often incorporate various learning tools, such as manipulatives, white boards, highlighting tape, flashcards, etc. to help my students grasp the concepts. If a student is not grasping a certain concept, I will present the information in an alternative manner in order for my student to understand the material.I currently teach 3rd grade and love every subject! As a teacher, my favorite part of the day is reading out loud to my students. I love to share my passion of reading with my students through a variety of genres, authors and levels of literature. I take pride in helping my students become lifelong readers with strong reading comprehension skills.I have tutored students in each of the elementary grades with significant focus on English Language Arts and Math. Most of the students I have tutored have been in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. In addition to tutoring during the school year, I also have tutored students over the summer. Some of the areas we focused on were summer reading projects (reading novels and improving reading comprehension), phonics and grammar. We also practiced various writing styles and how to add detail to writing. Helping my students with math was also a significant aspect of both summer and school year tutoring. We worked on various topics in math such as: multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, basic algebra, and word problems. In addition to Math and English Language Arts, I also have tutored students in Science, Social Studies, and Study Skills/ Test Preparation.Outside of school, I love to go for long runs on scenic trails! I also enjoy other areas of health and fitness. I have a passion for cooking (and a little baking) and enjoy experimenting with new recipes. When I am not busy in the kitchen, I enjoy trying new local restaurants with my friends and family. My dog, Taffy loves when we spend time in the yard playing fetch with her ball or a new stick!I look forward to working with you and your child to help them be successful in school!

I am a graduate of Wilkes University. I received my Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education and Special Education with a concentration in Reading. Since graduation I have had the opportunity to gain teaching experiences in every grade from 1st through 12th. I have focused my career on Math and Reading at the middle school or primary level and I enjoy teaching both of those extremely important subjects. My time as a Special Education teacher has allowed me many opportunities to work one on one with students and it is exceptionally rewarding to watch students grow and gain knowledge in that setting. I currently hold a teaching position with the Philadelphia School District and therefore have a great understanding of what skills students need to be successful in today's rigorous curriculum.Outside of my teaching career, I enjoy traveling and hope to see a different country each year. This past summer I had the opportunity to travel to both Spain and Italy and enhance my life through learning about the similarities and differences within the European culture. When I am not able to travel, I like to enrich my life by reading novels, participating in 5K runs and cheering on my favorite sports teams. My teaching style reflects my desire to be a life long learner. I believe that you can learn something from everyone you meet and every encounter. Education is truly the key to a quality life and one should never stop searching for knowledge. I truly believe that by spending my time tutoring and teaching children I can both enrich others lives as well as my own. I believe one must share knowledge to gain knowledge and must do so in a compassionate and patient manner. I understand that each person has various learning styles and I do my best to adapt my teaching to meeting each individual student's needs.

I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year. I have years of experience tutoring college students in math (mostly calculus) and chemistry including both general and organic chemistry. In addition, I am very familiar with all sections of the SAT and ACT having prepared several high school students for these tests. I believe that every student is capable of boosting his or her baseline score on these tests, so long as he or she works hard to get to know the format of the tests and the most popular types of questions. I tutor because I love seeing students develop a genuine passion for the subjects they once disliked (such as math and science), once they understand the power of these subjects and their applications to the real world.

I am a graduate of Fontbonne University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. In my student teaching experience, I taught all subjects in a first grade classroom. I have been working as a substitute teacher at the elementary level since graduating. I have taught all subjects in grade areas from Kindergarten through sixth grade. While I am capable of tutoring for a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about teaching reading and mathematics. I believe a day without learning is a day wasted, and I hope to impart this love of learning and hunger for knowledge to my students by helping them to discover knowledge rather than imparting that knowledge to them. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, Cardinals baseball, baking, and paper crafts.
