Recent West Covina Human Geography Tutoring Session Notes
Today, the student and I began studying for her exam in history. I had her complete a short multiple choice review, which included items that she had not been exposed to in class yet. I explained that it was likely that there would be unfamiliar items to her on the actual exam. She only missed six, and we discussed those and why she had them incorrect. She felt a lot better about the exam but we will keep reviewing each week leading up to it. Very good session!
After our session on The Colonies to the Constitutional Era, the student and I went over key people from this time frame, as well as Manifest Destiny and westward Expansion. We covered Lewis and Clark, the 1849 Gold Rush, and the ratification of the Bill of Rights. She submitted her first round of ACT vocabulary work to me, and had been able to complete nearly all of it independently. We continued our work on background information for writing a formal research paper, including sources and theses. We began work on Latin and Greek roots. We also discussed two writing projects she will be completing for me. One is in relation to the novel I assigned her ("Speak" by L.H. Anderson) and the other is a sampling of the varying types and styles of writing she will be expected to produce. For our next session, she will have written two different styles of paragraph (descriptive and narrative) and will have copies of poetry and a short story which we will workshop together.
The student and I met for the first time on Tuesday. We spent the majority of our time on social studies. She is studying Oceania in class, and as we worked together in her workbook she was capable of arriving at the correct answer. We talked about the process of doing homework and how that would improve her work. Her three main take aways are: read the directions, get in the "zone" by working at a table and not rushing, and identifying the key terms in a question.
We spent 30+ minutes getting started on English, Lesson 21. This is a poetry unit. We completed 3/4 of the assignment questions. The student will finish the last poem and questions for homework, then submit. Onto SS, lesson on Greek mythology, epics, and drama. We completed most of the reading and began the questions. The student will finish the final questions for HW.
Today the student and I began to work on his "Famous Missourians" project for his Social Studies class. He had already done a terrific job in collecting research for his project so today he began working on organizing that research and starting to write his report. At the end of our session we reviewed math and did a short multiplication facts quiz to refresh and check which facts he needs to focus on for the future.
The student and I worked on his homework. We completed his vocabulary and content questions worksheet related to the French book of myths he has been reading for class. We also finished his reading for social studies, on democracy in ancient Athens, and answered the assigned discussion question. He was also able to complete his math worksheet. In our remaining time, he studied his African geography, which he really enjoys and has pretty much mastered.
