What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Abbi in Lauderhill, FL
The student had an assignment for her British literature class and we worked on understanding some of the characters and their motivation/purpose in Shakespeare's 12th Night. Many of the themes and wording are hard for her to understand, but we made progress for her presentation assignment.

English Tutoring review by Madeleine in Lauderhill, FL
The student and I went over his rough draft paragraphs comparing Gods to celebrities for his English class. His paragraphs are improved. The rest of this session was spent looking at section 4.5 in geometry and him doing the assigned homework. 4.5 Discussed SSS and SAS postulates to prove two triangles are congruent. His understanding of the concept allowed us to move ahead to section 4.6 covering 2 additional postulates to prove triangles are congruent: ASA and AAS.

English Tutoring review by Mark in Lauderhill, FL
The student began his lesson today by taking a review quiz of the vocabulary words in Chapter #1 from the "Vocabulary Cartoons" Book. He gave correct definitions for 9 out of the 10 vocabulary words from Chapter #1 (90%). After the vocabulary review quiz, we proceeded to study the new vocabulary words from Chapter #2. The new vocabulary words include: 1) trenchant, 2) procrastinate, 3) roster, 4) impede, 5) forbear, 6) migratory, 7) evade, 8) efface, 9) asunder, and 10) incite. After we went over the words from Chapter #2, I gave him a twenty-question quiz (to check for understanding). Out of the 20 questions, he correctly answered all of them (100%). Following the Chapter #2 vocabulary quiz, we went on to continue our study of idioms. Today, we went over Section #2, "The Body Has Many Uses." He was familiar with most of the idioms in this section. After the review of the 10 new idioms, we did some grammar work. Specifically, he completed a worksheet on contractions (p. 16). Out of the 30 questions on this specific worksheet, he correctly answered all 30 (100%). He told me that he was pleased that we were going over this material. After completing the contractions worksheet, he worked on a subject-verb agreement worksheet (p. 53). He got 19 out of the 19 questions correct (100%). We concluded today's tutoring session with a writing assignment. I asked him to choose a specific location that he found interesting. He chose the city of Paris. I asked him to write a list of 6 specific nouns and 6 specific adjectives (to go with the nouns) of people, places, or things you would find in Paris. After he completed his list, I had him write a paragraph about Paris -- to include his list of 6 nouns and 6 adjectives. After he finished writing his paragraph, I had him read it to me aloud. I thought it was quite good, as he included many vivid and descriptive examples to support his topic (Paris). I them asked him to grade his paragraph. He gave himself a grade of "B-." I would of given his well-written paragraph a "B+." We accomplished a lot during today's tutoring lesson. He is a very bright student. He was focused on the task at hand during the entire session. Thus our tutoring lesson was very productive.

English Tutoring review by Rihana in Lauderhill, FL
We read a couple of passages about a trip to China. The student did very well with both of them, despite some strange words. He is getting better at using context clues to figure out strange words. We continued working on theme, and it finally clicked for him that theme is a larger concept than just the details of the story, which is fabulous.

We worked through two clinical scenarios, discussing different ways to improve communication. We also worked on pronunciation of different words pertinent to clinical scenarios. The student is going to be bringing additional materials for us to discuss and improve upon at our next meeting.

English Tutoring review by Janice in Lauderhill, FL
The student read two chapters from his independent reading book. We stopped at various points to discuss the text. I asked him questions about author's purpose, which connected to the theme of the story and helped bring out the character and personality traits of the main characters. I had him think about and compare and contrast the role models of the boys' mother and their coach, We also discussed the plot and how the conflict is ever increasing. Finally, he talked about how he thought the conflict would eventually be resolved.
