What material is covered in a Columbus MCAT course?
The MCAT is a standardized, computer-based, multiple choice exam. It is designed to help medical school admissions offices assess your problem solving, critical thinking, and verbal reasoning skills. This test will determine your knowledge of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts and principles that are prerequisite to the study of medicine. Each Columbus MCAT class is geared towards providing you with a positive learning environment along with other students that share similar goals. Each class also matches students with a qualified instructor that can help you feel comfortable come test day.
Knowing what to expect when you take the exam can be a critical factor, and test material is covered in depth in each Columbus MCAT course. Let's now examine what is covered in an MCAT exam. The test has 4 sections: Chemical & Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Each test taker is given 6 hours and 15 minutes to complete the test but should be prepared to be seated for 7 hours and 30 minutes. After the exam, each student will receive 5 scores: 1 from each section ranging from 118 to 132 points, and one combined total score ranging from 472 to 528 points. It is important to note that the test sections may contain experimental questions, but they will not count toward your final score.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning skills section contains 9 passage based sets of questions with 5 to 7 questions per set. You are given 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete this portion. Here, you will need to demonstrate your abilities in reading comprehension, analytical skills, and verbal reasoning. In this section, you should be prepared to see passages from a variety of humanities and social science subjects. You will be assessed on how successfully you can comprehend, infer meaning, apply, and extrapolate ideas from the passages into new contexts.
In the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section, you must answer 59 questions in 1 hour and 35 minutes. There are 10 passage based sets of questions containing 4 to 6 questions each, and there are 15 independent questions. The focus of this part of the exam is the human body. You should be able to show a comprehensive understanding of the functions of tissue, organ systems, and the chemical and physical principles of living systems. Examples of subjects that are tested include: introductory physics, basic biochemistry, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Knowing how the physical, biochemical, and mechanical functions of human organs, tissue, and systems relate to physics and chemical reactions will be important here.
The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section also has 59 questions to answer in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Here, you are again given 10 passage based sets of questions with 4 to 6 questions per set and 15 independent questions. You will need to show your knowledge of how cells and organ systems function in an organism; as well as comprehending processes that are unique to living organisms. Take time to demonstrate that you understand how organisms accomplish biological processes like reproduction, adaptation, responding to environments, and acquiring materials and energy. You will need to have a clear understanding of the various disciplines of chemistry in addition to basic biochemistry and biology. You will be assessed on your reasoning skills and ability to apply scientific inquiry to foundational biological concepts.
The last section you will encounter is Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. It contains 59 questions with 10 passage based questions - 4 to 6 questions per set - and 15 independent questions. You are given 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete this part of the exam. Your focus in this section is to show you have skills that will help you navigate a complicated and ever-changing medical field. The subjects examined in this section are biology, introductory sociology, and introductory psychology. Here you should be demonstrating the skills that are necessary to know when serving a diverse population and treating conditions that can impact social and mental health issues. A thorough understanding of human behavior and how personal well-being is constructed will be a key factor here.
