Winnetka AP Spanish Literature and Culture Tutoring FAQ
Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Literature and Culture demands excellence from students on multiple fronts, challenging them to read classic works of Spanish and Latin American prose and poetry, think critically about the meaning readers can take from each work, compare and contrast their various features, and convey their analyses in cogent, elegant Spanish prose. Sound overwhelming? It can be, but AP Spanish Literature tutoring can help you approach your AP Spanish Literature and Culture studies in an organized manner that minimizes your stress and maximizes your understanding of the material. Rather than tackling the admittedly difficult course on your own, it may improve your chances to employ the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor who can help you in each concept in a way that you are receptive to.
As AP Spanish Literature is situated at the intersection between traditional language-learning classes and the literary analysis students in the United States typically study in English courses, it's no surprise that each student taking the course experiences unique problems with the material. How could they not? Your studies bear a unique mixture of strengths and weaknesses, assumptions, experiences, preferences, and learning styles. Along with all this, AP Spanish Literature presents a wide variety of potential stumbling blocks over the course of each assignment. For instance, if you're trying to write an essay on the role of literature in the opening chapters of Cervantes' Don Quixote, you first need to understand complex syntactic and grammatical features of the Spanish language in order to read the work accurately. You then have to apply your critical thinking skills while explaining the meaning of the text. And if this weren't enough, you need to explain yourself in a language in which you may still have unsure footing, especially in a subject like literary analysis, which requires such specialized vocabulary. Varsity Tutors understands that the difficulties you encounter in your AP Spanish Literature courses are unique, so they aim to help you connect with tutoring that is similarly custom tailored.
Varsity Tutors has educational directors who begin by helping you hand select the tutor who can best address your specific needs. Your tutor can then design a curriculum just for your AP Spanish Literature tutoring sessions, based on your particular needs and concerns. They will factor in your personal strengths and weaknesses, the course's syllabus, your schedule, and your upcoming testing dates. These allow you to have a timetable in which to focus your studies on the areas that matter, rather than those that you already thoroughly understand.
If you struggle more with poetry than prose, your tutor can focus sessions on the former and spend less time on the latter. If formulating the subjunctive is difficult for you, your tutor can provide resources, exercises, and techniques for mastering the more challenging grammatical features of Spanish. If you struggle to achieve sophistication in your written work, your tutor can provide feedback during your sessions as to what aspects of your work detract from it in his or her eyes. And when it comes time to start gearing up for the AP Spanish Literature exam, your tutor can review each text on the reading list with you, provide resources modeled after the questions you will be asked on the exam, and teach you test-taking strategies particular to the final exam.
You can meet up with your tutor at your behest. If you prefer to meet face-to-face online or in person at your home, your personal tutor can work with you.
While AP Spanish Literature can easily seem overwhelming, the unique challenges it presents can help you develop two skills simultaneously that augment each other in the process. A private tutor can help provide you with the skills you need to in order to succeed in your AP Spanish Literature course. Call Varsity Tutors' educational directors to learn more today!

Recent Winnetka AP Spanish Literature and Culture Tutoring Session Notes
Today's session was spent working on the student's homework. His listening skill is improving, as well as his speaking. However, he does need to practice a little bit more. On the other hand, it's an improvement from when school started again. We also went over his stroke order and character writing.
We began by going over some homework the student did from his workbook. I then gave him a quiz on the vocabulary from lesson 4, dialogue 1. He did very well. We then practiced some grammatical constructions and conversed in Mandarin.
Today, the student practiced writing sentences using prepositional phrases and adjunct phrases in Chinese with emphasis on placing modifiers in the correct position in the sentence. We briefly discussed relative clauses, since they follow the same grammar rules as the phrase types she was studying, but did not go in depth, since her class has not yet covered them. We spent most of the session practicing asking and answering questions in conversation. Her use of tones has improved, and she was able to express a wide variety of ideas in Chinese. She understood most of the questions I asked her.
In today's class, I talked about the Chinese New Year to my students, using a presentation and cartoons. They enjoyed the Chinese story and Spring Festival very much. I also taught them the basic greeting words in China. They matched the flashcards I gave them for the basic communication. Their homework was to remember all the conversation.
Student 1 and I went through his action routine and reviewed the characters for 1-10. I also taught him the pattern for writing numbers in Chinese, using 10 as a base and adding numbers on to 10 (for example, 21 in Chinese characters is 2 10 1). he and I quickly reviewed his action words, including up/down and left/right with the help of a yoga ball.
Student and I reviewed the old and new characters she had learned. I had her say the words in addition to recognizing the characters.
We talked about the Chinese new year and started a new lesson today about online chatting in China. The student read both texts and translated them into Chinese. She also wrote a 15-line dialogue in Chinese incorporating all the key words.
