Hi, my name is Andy Hatcher. I've worked in the field of education my entire career, and there is no other work I could imagine doing or finding more fulfilling.
After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1999, I joined the Teach For America program and became a high school English teacher in Los Angeles, CA. After four years at my original placement school in Watts, I moved to the Bay Area and began teaching at a public charter school. In all, I taught high school English for 9 years. At that point I had begun taking on more administrative and extracurricular responsibilities at my school and decided to make the move to school administration. I became a Dean of Students at a middle school in Oakland and was later accepted into a principal training program called New Leaders.
At that point, my wife, our newborn son, and I moved to Madison, WI, so she could pursue graduate studies in education at the university there. I was a stay-at-home dad for a year before rejoining the public education workforce, first as a Dean of Students and then as an external positive school culture coach. My wife gave birth to our daughter at the beginning of our 5th year in Madison, and I returned to being a stay-at-home dad. Upon her graduation in the spring of last year, my wife got a job as a professor in education at UTSA, which brought us to San Antonio.
Currently, I'm staying home with our daughter while deciding on next steps for my career here. While I have held several education-related positions, I'm a teacher at heart, and I miss the daily, meaningful student connections only a classroom teacher and tutor can make. As a teacher, I enjoyed diving into relevant, challenging texts with students and working on every step of the writing process. I believe in the power of building relationships and making connections first and foremost. Issues of equity and assuring equal access for all to a high quality education are also very important to me.
I love being a dad. My hobbies and interests include playing guitar, songwriting, gardening, fishing, and exploring the outdoors with my family. We are excited to be in San Antonio, and I'm looking forward to seeing how I can support you with your studies in any way that I can. Please let me know how I can be of assistance.
