I would help a student stay motivated through encouragement and by setting goals that can be achieved by using their skills.

Work them through examples by breaking down each step throughout the process.

By teaching them that they can even succeed in that subject.

Figure out what learning style works best for the student and what they seem to be struggling with the most.

Setting attainable goals to help get to the final goal helps build confidence.
