Tutoring review by Jessica in Waterloo, NE
The student and I went over a worksheet to review finding unknown angles on a line intersecting 2 parallel lines using complementary, supplementary, and corresponding angles. He initially had forgotten some of the concepts from last session, but after a quick refresher was able to do this type of problem fairly well. It would be helpful for us to review this in a future session. We then worked on writing algebraic expressions based on word problems. He struggled with this initially but by the end of the practice set was fairly good at it. As many of these problems were ratios (e.g. x = 3/4 y) we worked on reversing them (y = 4/3 x). He did not have any difficulties with this. We then practiced circle equations (c = pi*d, d = 2r, a = pi*r^2). He did fairly well on these after a quick refresher. He is usually able to do a problem when he remembers how to do that certain type of problem (e.g. remembers the associated equations or process). However, remembering how to do the problem after not reviewing it for a week can be difficult for him. Periodically going back and reviewing old concepts after an interval of time would be helpful for the student. I was impressed, as usual, that the student worked hard and maintained a positive attitude.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Waterloo, NE
The student had an excellent day. It was our best one yet. He was focused and he was willing to do the problems that I provided him. And he did them very well. He also communicated to me some of the reasons why story problems are so difficult for him, which was very insightful. He (1) doesn't want to solve other people's problems (the girl has 10 bushels of oranges, she sells 1/3 of them, how many does she have left), and (2) he wants to know more about the characters. Very helpful.

Tutoring review by Danielle in Waterloo, NE
We worked on reading aloud, listening to a recording back of the student reading, and practicing how to read with correct breathing. We practiced how to write answers to questions, rephrasing the question, how to make sure sentences are complete, and how to find the answers in the reading and give complete answers. We started to work on reading a play to help with tone while reading.

The student and I covered grade 5 topics from his homework assignment, including but not limited to: grade 5 multiplication factorization, applications of grade 5 multiplication factorization, word problems associated with grade 5 division, and creating and solving multiplication mazes. The student was cooperative. He improved steadily as the session progressed. Once, he was prompted, he was able to solve most of the problems independently. His multiplication skills are impressive.
