About Me

I am a graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage. I received my Associates of Science degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Accounting. I recently went back to school to receive extra credits in medical sciences and photography for personal growth. I was always at the top of my class and I was a member of the National Honor Society throughout both high school and college. Part of my responsibilities of being a member of the National Honor Society was to tutor my peers. I have experience tutoring in math, science, literature, and business courses. I also have 5 children, and each one of them has their own struggle with academics. I find that making learning fun is key in developing a natural curiosity in any subject. If a student possesses that natural curiosity, it facilitates self-growth and allows students a better chance at learning on their own and needing less and less assistance. This builds confidence and a desire to learn even more. While I am capable of tutoring a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math, Science, and Business. In my professional experiences, I have worked in finance and medical billing offices. I have utilized my extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites, most notably Excel and Word, to develop intricate and user-friendly tools that assisted in day-to-day operations. With these tools I was able to bring the margin of error within these companies from over 20% down to 5%.I believe that knowledge is power and the best gift anyone can give another person is the power to gain knowledge. My teaching strategy is to make learning fun. In order to accomplish this goal, I spend time getting to know my students and relating their studies to their interests. This always facilitates natural curiosity and makes the student eager to learn more. By opening students' minds up to learning, they develop a skill that they can utilize long after my influence in their life is over. When I am not tutoring, I am working as a photographer in my photography and graphic design business that I co-own with my boyfriend. I also enjoy travelling, hiking, yoga, reading, and being a mother to my 3 beautiful children and 2 lovely stepdaughters.

Q&A with Jamie

To get excited about anything, all you have to do is relate it to your current interests. For example, my daughter thinks she hates math, but she absolutely loves fashion and everything to do with it. One way that I have been able to get her interested in her math studies is to always relate it to fashion in some way. If I am able to show her why algebra, for instance, is important to know when sewing and designing clothing then she realizes that it is something she needs to learn in order to be a fashion designer someday. It puts a different spin on things all of a sudden. The number one complaint of any student struggling with a subject is "when will I possibly use this in the real world?" Answer this question for them on an individual level, and all of a sudden, a road block disappears.
