Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Steven in Marion County, IN
The student had finished both his pre-calc and physics homework. After I helped him with a specific physics problem, we dove into a review packet for his pre-calc material. He notes he might have a test on this next week, perhaps before our next session, so it helped to review most of the problems in the packet. As long as he studies, I'm confident he'll do well on his test. I wish him good luck on his test, and I'll see him next Wednesday.

The student had finished up her questions from Friday, and we reviewed the rest of her practice AP exam. She struggles with Riemann sums that don't have consistent base (delta x) values and only charts, but overall understood the concepts fairly well. I encouraged her to write more on her exam paper, to label things and up the organization, as well as writing formulas down. I'm hoping she will become more comfortable with variables. We also discussed problems with one or two variables and the need for one or two expression relations (equations) to find variables. This is likely the last time we will meet for the rest of the semester.

Statistics Tutoring review by Nicole in Marion County, IN
The student had homework on combining like terms, graphs, and function rules. She worked through the problems and was trying to do them on her own. I discussed that it may be easier for her to either have the problems printed out or written out prior to us getting together so that she can focus on solving the problems with me. Copying the problems down is difficult for her, and it takes away time we could be working through extra practice problems.

Statistics Tutoring review by Lauren in Marion County, IN
The student had homework on exponential growth and decay. We went through what the formula meant and how to use it to solve problems when different pieces are missing. We also talked briefly about the natural log in preparation for his class the next day. He seemed to really have a good handle on these concepts and even said that he wished that every section was this easy to understand.

The student had homework on the chemical properties of water. She did well and it went by fast. She didn't have any math, so I worked on teaching her ratios and how they are different than fractions. We also took the time to break down the word problem they had. I also reviewed adding and subtracting negative numbers and briefly worked on multiplying positive and negative numbers. We had a little time left, so we did a pop quiz on chemical compounds vs. physical mixtures. We had to review a bit on physical vs. chemical changes.

The student had homework to do on factoring, the discriminant, and quadratic equations, and we did a few geometry practice problems. She labeled the parts of quadratic equations, plugged information into the quadratic equation, and used the order of operations to solve. She also rationalized square roots, rationalized denominators, simplified fractions, rounded decimals, learned about complex roots, and factored perfect square trinomials. She only needed a little help in memorizing and using the quadratic formula, but she quickly got the hang of it. She is confident in her ability to complete her homework without my help. She did a great job today!
