How can a tutor assist you in conquering Phonics?

All children need to understand phonics before they can understand reading at an elementary school level. One-on-one tutoring in Olathe, KS, can afford your child the ability to fine-tune their phonics skills by asking questions and getting immediate feedback.

Phonics is the skill of putting together isolated sounds of letters (phonemes) and groups of letters into word sounds that are essential to reading effectively. Phonetics is about how speech sounds, while phonics is about applying those sounds to the written words that represent those sounds. Some children understand syllables and valuables but struggle with sound to word matching, or hearing and making rhymes. Those are key reading and writing skills. Most young children struggle with some elements of phonics. All children need to understand how various phonemes translate to written words, and how the written words are supposed to sound when spoken. A child who falls behind in acquiring this skill will definitely struggle with reading and writing.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Brandy in Olathe, KS
We started with 16 new sight words today. The student was able to learn 12 of those words. We will review these words on Monday and start the next list. Like the other days, we did multiple reads to work on fluency. Each day, the student does better than the previous day. She is also able to improve her fluency within the tutoring session. She is getting a lot better at reading without trying to rush. She is really showing interest in the reading sections we are doing. Today we also read a story and worked on the main idea and details. We used a white board to write down the facts she recalled from the story. On the facts she could not recall, I had her reread and find information. We will continue with the same story Monday.

Phonics Tutoring review by Judy in Olathe, KS
We are using a book with one to two page stories followed by a set of questions for reading comprehension. Today we worked through several lessons. The student shows good progress at this. All the stories are non-fiction, so children learn about history while they are learning to read better. We worked for 1 1/2 hours in reading and the last half hour we worked on math. Estimating projects and quotients is an especially challenging skill, but he caught on very quickly. He is a very hard worker.

We are focusing on the Round One and Two words as well as the books provided by the student's intervention teacher at school. He read two entire books from the school, and wrote four sentences. I am still stressing capitalization and punctuation. He is getting good at self correcting the spelling of words such as "my," "read," and "games." He is getting better at self correcting when I ask him what he should fix on a given word (vs. me telling him how to fix it). It is going very well, reading a couple of shorter books each time. He is more comfortable reading and I can see that he is gaining confidence. I made a word draw game (focusing on Round Two words) to incorporate into Thursday's session.

Phonics Tutoring review by Peter in Olathe, KS
Today we worked on reading for analysis and did two context clue exercises. The student has definitely improved since I first began working with him. He seems to read faster, more accurately and with better confidence. He told me he especially likes to do context exercises as he still reads relatively slowly and has trouble understanding the content of sentences, especially if they have words he does not know or struggles to read.

Phonics Tutoring review by Mehek Farah in Olathe, KS
Today I asked the student to read the rest of chapter one, so I can work with her on the assignment. Once she finished, I asked her to go through each page and write down one important piece of information that she read. At the end of the chapter she had four pieces of information. I then helped her elaborate on those pieces in a paragraph form, which made it much easier for her to form a summary. For the reflection, I jotted down a few questions that she could answer in her reflection, so that she has some guidance while completing the reflection; This made it much easier for her to complete.

Phonics Tutoring review by Shaina in Olathe, KS
The student continued to work on decoding and comprehension during todays session. He still struggled with independently decoding unknown words in the texts he read, so for our next session, I will start implementing word sorts to work on in the beginning before we read the texts I bring. His overall comprehension of the text was pretty good. Even with the difficulties in figuring out the unknown words, he could still discuss and give important details from the books we read. For our next session, I feel that it would be best to work more heavily on decoding skills than comprehension since that's his area of more need. I left some texts for him to practice with until then.
