How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

Students in the 8th grade are able to take the High School Placement Test, or HSPT. The exam is required by selective private high schools. It spans five sections, with multiple-choice questions in verbal, quantitative, reading comprehension, math, and language skills. The exam is offered in January and has a score between 200 and 800 points. Though the test may be taken more than once, the HSPT accepts the lower of the scores as the official one, making it all the more important to aptly prepare for the exam ahead of time. If your child is planning to apply for a private high school, you may boost their chances of admission by contacting Varsity Tutors' educational directors in Cleveland, Ohio, to get in touch with expert HSPT tutors.

All of the tutors whom Varsity Tutors may connect you with in Cleveland are skilled at teaching the HSPT. We may locate a tutor who may complement your child's learning style in order to help them attain the best score possible.

HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in Cleveland, OH
We reviewed from last time. She's doing very well with everything we've been over so far. Then we talked about solving two step algebra problems, union and intersection, and base 5. Then we went over the questions she missed on the Language section, focusing on things to watch out for in usage.

HSPT Tutoring review by Mary in Cleveland, OH
The student and I started by going over some of his algebra homework (percentages). Then I timed him on a reading section. He still had two passages left at the end, so we do need to work on pacing over the next two weeks. I gave him a language test to time himself on before Tuesday.

HSPT Tutoring review by Kylie in Cleveland, OH
The student took a practice test last week, so we used this lesson to review her incorrect answers. We worked our way through the verbal reasoning and most of the math, and all we have left to review now is the language section. The student's performance on verbal reasoning was strong; I want to focus on improving her understanding of the logic-based questions before we move on to vocabulary. As far as math concepts, I feel that the student could use a little extra support when it comes to algebra, geometry, and percents. We will focus on these areas in future lessons.

HSPT Tutoring review by Robert in Cleveland, OH
The student and I covered the structure of the test, including overall time, progression of sections, and time per question. Afterwards we reviewed vocabulary words through online articles I provided as well as the words provided in the guide. Then we reviewed reading comprehension tips and strategies and practiced those using online articles I provided and the new guide as references. Finally, we discussed strategies and tips for verbal analogies and verbal logic for the first time, using online worksheets and the guide as practice. While going through the reading comprehension and verbal analogies/logic sections, I stressed the importance of broadening his vocabulary, which can best be done by reading more. He has been making significant progress and merely needs exposure to more vocabulary to improve his skills.
