I believe all students have the capacity to learn there needs to be an understanding of their individual pace, weaknesses, and strengths to match them with the best educator for their learning style. I enjoy the individualized attention I am able to give my students in a tutoring setting. We accomplish goals much quicker when lessons can be personalized.

I also work at the collegiate level as a writing and reading tutor. I also have experience as an elementary teacher for many grade levels. It is fulfilling to work with both college level and school age students. I specialize in the unique learning styles of the homeschool community.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching should be performed in a style that is engaging and accurate with the goal of mastery, not simply obtaining a high test score.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like some information about what interests that student. I would share some facts about who I am.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by gradually demonstrating to them that they are capable of succeeding with their assigned task and slowly decreasing reliance on me.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I try not to overwhelm students, and I find it useful to bring to their attention accomplishments they have achieved.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I slow down the pace of instruction. I try to ascertain what is causing the difficulty and address it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I use a variety of techniques that are proven to increase student comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It is important to establish a good and trusting rapport with a new student. I then ascertain what their interest and ability levels are.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will use high interest materials.
