Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

GRE Tutoring review by Gerard in Salt Lake City, UT
In our last session before her exam, the student and I spent most of our time going over the math sections from her most recent practice GRE attempt. We talked about some specific content such as how to deal with average problems, ratios and some geometry formulas. We also identified some points where she can free up some additional time by skipping particularly hard questions. She will review some of the formulas she needs to know and also go over her vocabulary flashcards in preparation for her exam Saturday.

GRE Tutoring review by Alicia in Salt Lake City, UT
Today was my first session with the student as she prepares to take the GRE in mid-December. We started out by discussing general strategies on how much time to spend studying each day, as well as how to spread out studying amongst different topics. We then looked more closely at two different types of questions that will appear on the GRE verbal portion of the exam - Sentence Equivalence questions and Text Completion questions. We walked through a handful of examples of each, and discussed how to find context clues in the questions that can tip you off to what the correct answer needs to be similar to, as well as other strategies for eliminating wrong answers.

GRE Tutoring review by Nicole in Salt Lake City, UT
Today, the student and I discussed his goals for the tutorial. He had already completed a full-length practice test. We then decided to focus the majority of our efforts on the quantitative reasoning and reading comprehension sections, as vocabulary seems to be a strength. We covered math fundamentals and introduced reading comprehension. The homework included math drills, a reading comprehension drill, and vocabulary.

GRE Tutoring review by Andrew in Salt Lake City, UT
This was our first session. We went over the general structure of the GRE including subject areas and format. The student showed me the results from his first practice test - he received a 160 in Verbal and 153 in Quant. He is taking the test on Oct 31 (not a lot of the time) and hopes to see a 5-10 point improvement in each subject. We spent the second half covering the essay basics, and for homework, I recommended he write a couple of practice essays and start reviewing vocabulary.

GRE Tutoring review by Alex in Salt Lake City, UT
For our first session, the student and I reviewed some test-taking strategies to increase her efficiency on the Quantitative section and reduce errors and missed points. Additionally, we looked at the Quantitative comparison-style questions and methods for solving those. We also reviewed and practiced some math skills: exponents, roots, triangles, and probability. We finished with a quick discussion of the Essay section. She will practice between now and our next session, and we will review her work at our next session.
