Tutoring review by Daniel in Eagan, MN
The first thing that we went over in the lesson was long division. The student was able to do the steps to complete a division problem, but he was also able to use a shortcut by using his times tables and subtracting the remainder. I reminded him to show his work if it is asked for. We then went on to circle graphs and modeling fractions. He seemed to understand that fractions represent parts of a circle but may need additional work in drawing circle graphs. We then worked on multiplying fractions. He needed to be reminded of the procedure but completed the problem afterwards and did an excellent job reducing it. We also worked on adding and subtracting fractions. He does a good job in finding the common denominator. He also needs more review on mixed numbers and improper fractions. I will be sending step-by-step guides for how to add fractions, change mixed numbers, and change improper fractions.

Today we reviewed basic math, division, multiplication, addition/subtraction, powers, roots, and logs. We are working to help the student refresh on the basic math functions and arithmetic before we begin working on the calculus topics. He is doing a good job in understanding the basic concepts, and we should be able to finish our review in one more session.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Eagan, MN
We reviewed circles and using interior angles to find the arc length of a segment of the circumference. We also practiced converting between degrees and radians for angle measurements and found how the radius of a circle is related to the arclength marked by a certain interior angle. We also reviewed angles in the context of triangles and intersecting lines. The student only had papers from the current topic, so we focused mainly on new material rather than earlier concepts. We plan on going over earlier topics, particularly old quizzes or tests, as well as reviewing what she's learning about circles now. The student did well applying concepts about angles in general, to the current ideas about interior angles of a circle.

Tutoring review by Kwaku in Eagan, MN
Today, the student covered 6 pages of his summer math preparation packet. He has about seven pages left which he should be able to cover since a couple of pages are repeated. We covered rounding numbers and inequalities explicitly today. He struggled a little today with knowing where to round numbers to. So, we took a five minute break that allowed him to recuperate and then jump back in. And from there on he was much better. The next session could possibly be the last one depending on how much we cover in that time period.

Tutoring review by Rosalyn in Eagan, MN
The student was excellent and engaged with the material. We were able to pinpoint where she was having difficulty with the problem (mostly the imaginary roots) and to find a polynomial that fit the required parameters. She also looked at how multiplying by additional factors changes the graph of a polynomial function.

Tutoring review by Haley in Eagan, MN
During yesterday's session, the student and I worked on several topics. He had already finished his spelling homework when I arrived, so he began with his math homework - his class is working on performing mathematical operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation. Some of his word problems involved very large numbers, and building on information from previous problems. I showed him how sometimes when there are lots of large numbers we're dealing with, it can be useful to make diagrams to keep track of what is being asked in the word problem. Overall, he demonstrated an excellent grasp of scientific notation. He then moved on to his French homework. His assignment was to study the verb courir (to run) and to answer a series of questions in his textbook using the pronoun "y," to take the place of a previously-specified location in a sentence. One skillset I would love to see the student begin to practice more is getting in the habit of asking clarifying questions if he doesn't understand a topic, rather than doing guesswork or being hesitant to bring up that he may be unsure about how to approach a problem-set or certain content. I look forward to continuing to work on French with him, because it seems that he may not have been taught many effective techniques in class for how to practice and develop mastery of important language topics. We concluded our session with working on a draft of a model high school essay question. The prompt was "Describe a challenging event you have had to overcome, and how it affected you." I gave him a couple of pointers to think about heading into the essay (he had already chosen what he was going to write about), and then he wrote freely and I made some grammatical suggestions and minor technical tweaks at the end. I was very impressed and appreciative of his openness when writing about (and accepting help on the assignment) personal events that he's had to overcome in the past. He deserves huge kudos for this, and I really look forward to continuing to working on these essays with him. I made him a "high school essay pointers sheet" with tips to keep in mind, mostly surrounding what admissions professionals are generally looking for when they read these essays. Overall it was a very productive session, and I appreciate the student's willingness to work with me on these items. Great work!

How can private tutoring with an accomplished tutor help you achieve your learning goals?

From assistance in elementary-level reading and writing to support in graduate-level math and science, private tutoring is an undeniably powerful educational tool. Tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform work with students of all ages, including adults, to improve their areas of weakness and to further develop their strengths. Perhaps you’d like to learn conversational French for an upcoming vacation, or your child has mastered simple fractions and is ready to work ahead in their math class. Or maybe your child is facing significant hurdles with reading comprehension and vocabulary. A tutor can help in all of these situations, as well as many others.

Multiple studies have shown that tutoring can lift average students to the top 2% (or 98th percentile) of their classes. Students who are currently high achievers can also benefit from improved grades and test scores. In fact, eight out of 10 students found that tutoring carried a measurable academic benefit, while 45 out of an examined 52 studies (nearly 90%) concluded that tutored students outperformed non-tutored students.

Tutoring is highly effective in part because tutors adapt their lessons to their students’ learning styles. Classroom lectures and textbook explanations can prove insufficient when a topic is unfamiliar or complex. To further complicate matters, teachers may have little time to provide additional support to their students. A tutor, on the other hand, works with you one-on-one via private tutoring or with a small group of students via Varsity Tutors’ live, online group courses (available in select subjects).

Tutors can accommodate visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning styles, among others. They can also enrich their tutoring sessions with a wide variety of resources. These resources may include teacher-provided tools like assignment sheets and short readings, as well as supplementary tools like videos, manipulables, and graphics. The Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform also equips students and tutors with test prep books for key exams like the ACT, GRE, and SAT and thousands of practice problems. If your college-age student is struggling in organic chemistry, for instance, a tutor may help them review bonding with a series of labeled illustrations and carefully chosen practice problems. If you are trying to perfect your Spanish pronunciation, on the other hand, your tutor might utilize videos, live conversation, and audio recordings.

Because all tutoring sessions are personalized with your learning style and precise needs in mind, you can spend as little or as much time as you need on specific concepts and skills. In a traditional classroom or at a traditional tutoring center, this is next to impossible. A tutor can even help you identify the areas where you need to spend more or less time if you aren’t sure what they are. For example, while one student may need to spend several months refining their time management techniques for the ACT or SAT, another student may be able to perfect their strategies in a few hours.

Ultimately, every person learns differently—and while typical classrooms aren’t equipped to teach to each student individually, tutoring is.

How are tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform selected?

A great tutor can make even the most impossible of tasks seem possible. Achieving this end, however, involves more than just subject knowledge. An effective private tutor is also an excellent communicator. An effective private tutor likewise has a friendly demeanor that fosters confidence in your developing skills and content mastery. With Varsity Tutors, tutoring sessions are a positive and enriching environment to learn in, no matter your age or current abilities.

If you’re thinking, “All of that might be hard to find in tutors near me,” or if you’re simply dreading the search for a reputable tutor, rest assured that Varsity Tutors eliminates all of the hard work. Our comprehensive screening and qualification process ensures that you learn from an incredible tutor without having to conduct dozens of time-consuming interviews on your own.

Tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform hail from competitive colleges and universities, including America’s Ivy League institutions. All tutors must successfully pass a background check prior to meeting with students, and their academic credentials (such as any certifications, grades, and test scores) are carefully examined. Whether you’re in need of a tutor who can help your child improve their PSAT performance or you need help with compiling your graduate school applications, we verify that your instructor has the expertise necessary to help you shine.

In total, potential tutors complete six steps that determine whether or not they pass through our extensive vetting process. These steps are also designed to assess each prospective tutor’s ability to teach in a clear, engaging manner. Tutors are asked to provide a record of their prior teaching experience, and must demonstrate their aptitude via simulated lesson plans and mock tutoring sessions. This prevents frustrating scenarios in which a tutor is highly knowledgeable about a given subject, but unable to adequately convey that knowledge to their students (an experience that many of us have had at one time or another, and that can waste precious time).

The tutor profiles displayed above represent just a fraction of the tutors who are waiting to assist you with your learning goals. Varsity Tutors can help you identify the one tutor from this broad pool who is uniquely suited to your learning style and needs—all without additional effort or work on your part.

When is tutoring available?

One of the advantages of connecting with a tutor on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform is the flexibility that it affords you and your family. Maybe you’d like to prepare for a professional certification like the SIE or Series 7 after work, or perhaps your child must balance school, extracurricular activities, familial commitments, and tutoring. Tutors can meet whenever you’re free, which can be a significant advantage when you have very little time to spare. Love to study on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening? Prefer to meet with your tutor on a Saturday or Sunday morning? Not a problem—Varsity Tutors will help you find a tutor who has the subject matter expertise and the availability that you need.

Tutors can meet with you online further increasing the flexibility of this powerful educational tool. With online tutoring, you can work with the very best tutor for you, even if they live in California and you live in New York. This is a great option if you live in a rural area or require a tutor with rare or highly specific qualifications. If you find yourself asking, “How will I possibly find the right tutors near me?” Varsity Tutors can help you do just that.

Online tutoring sessions take place in a secure environment via desktop or mobile devices like a smartphone or tablet. Our Live Learning Platform includes features like video chat, a whiteboard, integrated practice problems, and subject-specific tools such as a document editor and a periodic table. Students can also opt to replay sessions for increased recall and understanding of session concepts.

For on-demand needs, you can also choose Instant Tutoring. With Instant Tutoring, you can select a subject to receive assistance in, click a button on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform, and connect with a live online tutor in as little as 15 seconds. Instant Tutoring is ideal for homework emergencies, language practice, or last-minute test prep, and is currently available in all K-12 academic subjects. This includes subjects like algebra, biology, essay editing, and history.

If you prefer face-to-face interactions, tutors like those above can also meet with you in person. Tutors come to you, eliminating the need to travel to an inconvenient tutoring center or to battle traffic in general. Private tutoring sessions can take place in your home or at a nearby location of your choosing. You might find that it’s easier to focus at your local coffee shop or library. If so, your tutor can meet you there. If your child would rather work from your kitchen or living room, their tutor can do that too.

Interested in a live, online group course instead of one-on-one tutoring? Still need to balance a packed day-to-day life? We understand. New small group courses in select subjects begin each month. A variety of times, such as evenings and weekends, are available to suit a range of scheduling needs.
