Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by S.C. in Canton, OH
We spent the session practicing pronouns replacing nouns in sentences of varying tenses, both singly and in doubles. This is a difficult topic and requires a lot of practice, especially in the past tense, so I suggested the student continue to practice with the materials he has from school as well as the example sentences we worked on via the Document Editor on the online platform.

Concepts covered in today's lesson: -Object Pronouns, -Le Subjonctif, and -Orthography (spelling and contractions) The student was a wonder to work with today. He needed some help identifying when to use which object pronoun. He could still use a bit more practice with this topic before he masters it, as it's complicated. We will review this topic again before his midterm or final. He seems to have a good grasp of the formation of the subjonctif, and tomorrow we will work more on identifying when to use the tense and then producing spontaneous sentences with it. Next time, I'd like to see him come with a stack of flashcards, cut small, so we can start building a vocabulary deck. Also, feel free to send me any homework on which you would like feedback! Corrections are very important for learning.

French Tutoring review by Alexandra in Canton, OH
We covered grammar primarily this session. We looked at the difference between que/ qui and covered uses of lequel. I gave her practice sentences to write out on the whiteboard to cement the grammar rules and their exceptions. I used several approaches to practice sentences including writing the parts of the sentence (i.e. subject, infinitive verb, tense, negation) and having her put them together with correct agreements and conjugations. I also had her write down practice sentences that I said aloud. The student completed her homework about past tense. The homework had two 5-minute videos explaining past tense and irregular verb conjugations. We watched that together and she did not have many questions on the content. She then completed the 7 exercises. She felt quite comfortable with past tense. We will continue to work on distinguishing between avoir/ etre helping verbs, not forgetting agreement when it is necessary, memorizing the irregular verb conjugations and practicing complex compound sentences. I provided her with a verb wheel with irregular verbs and their conjugations on it so that she can use it during homework as a last resort. This is a more interactive way of looking up verb conjugations (which will hopefully replace Google Translate) and my goal is to get her so accustomed with these irregular verbs that she needs it less and less as the year progresses.

French Tutoring review by John in Canton, OH
Subject Matter: The passe compose. The student's Assignment: Redo exercises 1 and 2 as a google document and email the document to me. The student has excellent pronunciation. He is polite and patient. The most effective approach will be for me to prepare exercises several times a week using my copy of the textbook. I will send the exercises to the boys, and each will complete the exercises and send them to me as an attachment. This approach will permit consistent back-and-forth work to lock in the grammatical concepts.

French Tutoring review by Stephanie in Canton, OH
I brought worksheets, including the most common verbs in French and their conjugations, and we practiced utilizing these and vocabulary by formulating sentences. I advised the student to continue practicing formulating these as it will assist her in remembering when and when not to conjugate the verbs and it will assist her in remembering the verbs themselves. We agreed to go over reading material in our next session.

French Tutoring review by Melissa in Canton, OH
The student did a really good job on the imparfait. He's ready for his quiz there. We went over the relative pronouns que and qui. I also had him read a little bit, and he did a pretty good job. I think it is going to be most useful for him to practice vocabulary, pronunciation, and reading comprehension. It's the first thing I've given him that's been a challenge. We'll keep doing things like this.
