I'm referring to math, of course, but I didn't always like the subject. Until about age 16, I thought of math as a boring, mind-numbing process of blindly memorizing formulas and then forgetting them after the test, but a series of wonderful teachers showed me the truth. I had thought that everything in math was invented arbitrarily just to torture students, but actually it all made sense in a deep way. When I caught a glimpse of what math really was, I found it irresistible and I ended up majoring in math in college at UChicago. I'm currently a Master's student in Computer Science at NYU.

I am a recent American University graduate with a BS in Biology and I will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next year to begin my PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology. After completion of my doctorate degree, I aspire to be a university-level professor with both research and teaching responsibilities, and so I welcome any and all opportunities to teach and empower students of any age. I worked for American University's Academic Support and Access Center (ASAC) for 3 years as a private peer-tutor for students and student-athletes and have experience tutoring Math (Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra 1, and Statistics) and Science (General Biology I/II, Cell Biology, and Evolution). I also have a firm grasp on and have informally tutored in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Organic Chemistry I/II, and Physics I/II. I am happy to provide references and transcripts upon request!

I am about to complete a M.A. in Physics at UC Berkeley, after receiving my B.S. from MIT with a double major in literature and particle physics. I love to learn, but I also love to teach, and have been serving as a tutor or teacher in some capacity since high school. I'm a veteran of the AP system and of the SAT, and a more recent veteran of the GRE, so I know what's tough about these tests and how to conquer them. My tutoring philosophy is centered around teaching the core concepts of a subject, so students have a good sense of where strategies come from and how to apply them. Ultimately I think most math, science and humanities is extremely interesting if you can build confidence and fundamental understanding, and I hope to share my enthusiasm with my students!

I'm a recent graduate from Harvard University, where I majored in Neurobiology with a minor in Economics. I particularly enjoy tutoring for the SAT and other standardized tests, because I believe that with enough practice and some solid test-taking strategies, anyone can master these. As a former Division I runner, I've learned the importance of persistence and hard work, and I love sharing these values with my students and helping them to make significant gains. Outside of tutoring, I work as a scientist at a healthcare startup, and when I'm not at work I'm likely to be found running around Central Park, debating public policy, or practicing my cooking skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Finite Mathematics covers a diverse range of applied math topics designed for real-world problem-solving. Common areas include linear programming, matrix algebra, probability and statistics, combinatorics, logic, set theory, and financial mathematics (including interest, annuities, and amortization).
The specific topics you'll focus on depend on your course curriculum, as Finite Mathematics is taught differently across institutions. A tutor can align instruction with your textbook and course objectives, helping you master both the computational skills and the conceptual reasoning behind each topic.
Finite Mathematics focuses on discrete topics and real-world applications without limits or continuous functions—no calculus concepts like derivatives or integrals. Calculus, by contrast, deals with continuous change and is more theoretical. Many students take Finite Mathematics as an alternative to Calculus, particularly in business, social sciences, and computer science programs.
Whether you need both depends on your major and degree requirements. Some programs require Calculus instead of Finite Mathematics, while others accept either, or require both. A tutor can help clarify your path and build confidence in whichever course you're taking.
Word problems require students to translate real-world scenarios into mathematical language—identifying variables, setting up equations or inequalities, and deciding which mathematical tools apply. This demands both conceptual understanding and strategic thinking, not just procedural skills. Many students can solve an isolated equation but struggle when that equation is buried in a paragraph of context.
Effective tutoring breaks this process into manageable steps: reading carefully, highlighting key information, identifying what you're solving for, and checking whether your answer makes sense in the original context. With practice and guided problem-solving, students develop the pattern recognition needed to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence.
A strong Finite Mathematics tutor combines deep subject knowledge with the ability to explain concepts in multiple ways. They recognize that Finite Mathematics touches many disciplines—business, computer science, biology—so they can connect abstract topics like linear programming or matrices to real applications that resonate with you.
They also focus on building conceptual understanding rather than just drilling procedures. Great tutors ask questions to uncover why a method works, help you see patterns across different problem types, and teach you how to verify your own answers. They're patient with frustration and skilled at breaking complex multi-step problems into clear, logical sequences.
Matrices are a powerful organizational tool, but many students memorize row operations without grasping why they work or when to use them. A tutor helps you see matrices as a compact way to represent and solve systems of equations, connect row reduction to real problem-solving, and understand applications like network modeling or input-output analysis.
Through guided practice and visual explanation, you'll develop intuition for what matrix operations actually do, recognize when matrix methods are the right tool, and build the confidence to tackle larger, more complex systems. This shift from procedural to conceptual understanding is what transforms matrices from intimidating to manageable.
With consistent personalized instruction, most students see measurable progress within a few weeks: improved problem-solving strategies, better performance on assignments and quizzes, and reduced anxiety when approaching unfamiliar problems. Over a semester, you can expect to move from confusion on core topics to genuine conceptual understanding, which typically translates to stronger exam performance.
The timeline depends on where you're starting and how frequently you meet. Regular tutoring helps you catch gaps early, clarify misunderstandings before they compound, and build confidence through targeted practice. Many students report that working with a tutor doesn't just improve their grade—it changes how they think about math problems overall.
Finite Mathematics is taught using many different textbooks and approaches, each with its own emphasis and notation. Some courses prioritize probability and statistics, others focus on linear programming and applications, and some blend all topics. The chapter order, example types, and problem-solving methods can vary significantly.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who are flexible across different curricula and can align instruction with your specific textbook and course goals. Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, they work from your course materials, understand your professor's expectations, and help you master the material in the framework you're actually using.
