Tutoring review by Alissa in Medical Lake, WA
We finished reviewing for the student's Algebra 2 midyear this Thursday. We first talked more about inequality optimization problems and went over the problem I assigned him from last session. We have struggled to find his comfort zone with these problems because the way that I approach them is very different than he has been taught. Therefore, I recommended that he clarify this with his teacher tomorrow. We also spent time on applications of different quadratic factoring techniques (completing the square, factoring, and quadratic formula). The student was a little unclear on the bigger picture of why we use these techniques, especially when applying them to new types of problems. Lastly, we covered basic cubic factoring techniques (sum and difference of two cubes) and did a couple practice problems to aid his understanding. We ended the session discussing the student's remaining study plans for the test.

Tutoring review by Mythilee in Medical Lake, WA
Today we went over the student's homework that's due tomorrow, as well as some review for her final exam. This included topics such as mean, median, mode, finding the IQR, Q1, Q3, and making box and whisker plots. She had some trouble figuring out IQR, Q1, and Q3, but had an easier time with the mean, median and mode. She also had a problem figuring out how to do MAD (mean altered deviation), but could complete these problems after a little bit of practice. For homework, I gave her some extra practice problems concerning the topics we covered today.

We covered several concepts in algebra during this session. After learning the basics of set theory, we moved on to unions and intersections. The student seemed to understand this part quite well. He was also good at picking up equations of a line, which we started and will continue next week. I have assigned him some algebra HW for him to finish before we meet next.
