I first began tutoring during grad school, but educating others has been a part of my life since second grade, when my teacher paired me with a struggling student for the majority of the school year and pleaded with me to help him stay on track. I can still remember quietly whispering variations of the instructions to him and helping him complete his work after I'd finished mine. This propensity to help struggling workers has stayed with me. Although I didn't study education in college or grad school, I left school feeling quite passionate about helping other succeed. I applied and was accepted to Teach for America, where I was assigned to teach at an inner-city middle school in Dallas, Texas. I asked to be paired with the students who were having the hardest time finding traction in the academic setting and went on to teach variations of remedial and intervention reading for the next six years. Alongside these intervention courses, I have also taught general ed Social Studies and English.I believe that everyone wants to be good at the work given to them, but that not everyone is set up for success at every venture along the way. My goal is to meet students where they are, assure them that it's okay to be there, and motivate them to want to take that next step when they're ready. Once we've reached that point, I can step in and provide all the tools and strategies necessary to succeed!I am patient and calm with my students and always try to keep a smile and a sense of humor throughout the tutoring session. Rather than making students simply memorize formulas and regurgitate them on paper, I want to see students critically think and solve math problems. I aim to achieve the balance between the efficient rate of covering materials and understanding the materials.Outside of academia, I personally like listening to music as well as socializing with my friends. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge.While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. I am a Columbia student currently completing a degree in Chemical Physics and Mathematics.
