Rosanna

Conversational Spanish Tutor • +6 Subjects

Hi! I'm Rosanna. I'm a singer-songwriter from Western Massachusetts, currently living in Brooklyn. I'm available to tutor Spanish at all levels in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Other than music, the thing I love most is learning! I started studying Spanish in elementary school and continued throughout middle school, high school, and college. I even took a gap year during which I studied Spanish intensively in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I also studied abroad in Havana, Cuba in college, and went back later to do thesis research. Currently, I am as comfortable speaking Spanish as I am my native language, English. I speak Spanish exclusively at home with my husband, who is from Cuba. Being bilingual has opened my mind and enriched my life and I am passionate about helping others towards the same goal. When teaching Spanish my focus is on not only vocabulary and grammar, but pronunciation - which is key to not just passing tests but really speaking the language. I believe that language learning is an innate ability we all possess, you just have to learn to tap into it. That's where I come in!

I have experience teaching in all grades, K-6. I completed my first full year of solo teaching in May. It was an incredible learning experience and the knowledge I gained from my first year is irreplaceable. I worked with a variety of students from vast educational backgrounds. Working with these students made me develop and incorporate many different instructional strategies to suit their learning styles. I am very enthusiastic about education and this is evident throughout my instruction. I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement and am constantly encouraging my students throughout my lessons. I believe that education should be a positive experience for all involved.Outside of school I have many different hobbies and interests. I have an energetic Brittany Spaniel, Poppy. Poppy keeps me entertained 24 hours a day. We enjoy going on long walks together (4-5 miles a day) and visiting different dog parks around the city. I am passionate about literature. I love reading anything and everything. I am currently the president of a book club. We have monthly meetings where we discuss our latest book club read and decide on the next month's venture. I love to cook and I also enjoy traveling. I was fortunate to take part in a life-changing journey to India in March. It was absolutely amazing. I love adventure and I have a passion for learning, exploring, and discovering new things as often as possible.

Every student searching for a tutor has a goal. It is my job (and my pleasure!) to help the student reach that goal efficiently and effectively. I love to work with a student and see the light bulb go on, and hear them say "That's easy!" The outcome of our tutoring sessions should be that the student attain a level of confidence that his/her goal will be achieved. While I do have the educational background in my tutoring subject areas, what is most important for the student is that the subject be explained clearly in relation to the student's desired outcome. Many students tell me that I explain concepts in a clear, easy to understand fashion, and I welcome the opportunity to do the same for you!

Education has always been very important to me. Many subjects can be very difficult to learn and learning how to deal with the stress of that is something that I can understand. I believe in helping people not only in understanding the subject, but also learning study techniques, planning, organization and how to deal with stress. When you do not know a subject matter it becomes boring and you lose interest. When you know the subject matter it becomes interesting and fun. No one likes to watch Jeopardy when you do not know the answers. When you know the answers, you feel confident and are having fun.

I am a retired Army veteran and Navy veteran of which I served a total of 10 years. I have an Associate of Applied Science Degree for Intelligence Operations from Cochise College. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree for Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power and Energy Systems) at Arizona State University. I wish to do developmental work and research in power and energy solutions with nano-material science applications. I have traveled all over the world from my military time and made the best use of this time by learning about multiple cultures and human environments. My time in the military helped develop my views on the human condition and our existence on this planet. With these views, I have discovered the purpose of learning and the need for proper education. I don't see learning as a systemic process of digesting and regurgitating information in a highly structured and methodical manner. Learning is not a performance art. Learning is an individual race towards developing multiple perspectives of a comprehensive concept. If you focus your learning on the following two principles, there is nothing you can not learn: 1) Do you know how to learn? And 2) Are you able to progress with your learning? If you can answer both questions effectively, there is nothing you cannot learn. Once this is accomplished, you must learn multiple perspectives to master a concept. I teach and mentor in this way. I have taught my own developed classes and training while in the military, and I homeschool my children. I enjoy learning about new developments and discoveries in the sciences and I enjoy watching and reading a whole host of subjects. When I am not teaching, learning or studying, I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my children.
