I am currently completing a double major in Mathematics and Biology along with a minor in Chemistry at Pacific University of Oregon. I have enjoyed these subjects for as long as I can remember and have always helped out my friends when they were having trouble. Now in college, I work as a tutor in the Center for Learning and Student Success and give official help to my peers. I have found that sciences always seem to be taught in the same structure which makes it difficult since everybody learns differently. By being a tutor, I love working with the learner to find what works best for them, then seeing the following face of amazement when it all clicks into place. Over the years it has been a joy to learn and I am excited to spread that same joy to many others.

Having experienced the rigor of learning from myriad tutors and learning centers firsthand, I feel that I have picked up several useful studying and test-taking techniques that may help all different types of students. I think it is important to find the easiest and the most efficient and enjoyable techniques for each particular student, as every individual learns better in different ways. As a college student now, I still use many of these studying strategies and have been exposed to even more from my fellow peers. As a student, I was consistently left disappointed with teachers who just taught curriculum with no real student engagement, so I seek to change that. I am a graduate of the University of Washington with degrees in Japanese History and Korean Language and Linguistics, with minors in Japanese language as well as Linguistics. I work as an editor and localizer in my spare time and am also an avid gardener and needleworker. While I tutor a variety of subjects, my favorites are Japanese and English. Communication is of utmost importance to me and the more languages learned, the easier it is to communicate and understand the world around us. I have been studying Japanese for 19 years and have a native fluency.

I have not formally tutored before, but I have extensive experience working with children, as well as helping my peers at school. Since graduation, I have taught private piano lessons to students in my own studio, volunteered with an English Conversation Group (teaching English to international students and refugees), and informally assisted in tutoring children and friends with writing, history, and grammar.I am most passionate about English (especially writing and editing essays), Music, and History. I have had wonderful opportunities to help students learn to love subjects they previously hated by showing them their own innate ability to understand these subjects. I believe strongly that if a student can be shown why something is the case, he or she will be more successful at, and interested in, the subject as a whole.Helping students become "learning detectives," who get to the bottom of each topic they are learning, is one of my biggest passions. In my spare time, I love to pull out my books of Chopin or Beethoven sonatas and play the piano for hours, paint with acrylics, and read dusty old books - the older the better.

As a college professor, mentor, and tutor for 20+ years, specializing in world religions, religion and society, and writing, my passion is to prepare students to critically interpret uses of language in the world, develop their own expressive skills, and achieve their academic and professional goals. The daughter of under-educated parents, as well as a world-traveler, I am especially committed to supporting first-generation college students, those for whom English is a second language, and working adults as they navigate the challenges of higher ed. Nevertheless, I have taught and mentored graduate students at Harvard and talented undergrads in a variety of disciplines and welcome helping with theses. In addition to teaching, I have a background in publishing and editing, and have been a writer since childhood. Language creates reality, and interpreting and using it well opens many doors. I graduated from Stetson University with my BA in 2017, and since then have worked in inner city schools. The last two years, I have taught Algebra and Geometry at a charter high school, while managing a math tutorial program within the school. I find great joy is setting students up for success and helping them achieve the utmost in school. I do not only focus on student academic performance, but also on their social-emotional well-being, so they may attain a positive mindset of their day-to-day learning. I have 10 years experience working with elementary kids, including assisting with homeschooling. However, I am more passionate about helping students understand higher levels of mathematics. I am a believer in quality education, that's why I make sure to create an engaging learning environment for my students.

I'm an honors graduate from University of Houston-Downtown with my B.S. in Applied Mathematics and my minors of Biology, Chemistry and Microbiology.I started tutoring Calculus at my high school in 2005. Ever since that experience, tutoring developed into a passion of mine and I continued tutoring Math along with Chemistry and Physics throughout my undergraduate years. I firmly believe that every student deserves the absolute best instruction possible, and unfortunately this is not always possible in the classroom. I have also had a great deal of experience working on SAT test prep. Although I specialize on the Math section (perfect scores on Math II and Physics subject tests), I can provide test strategies on all sections of the ACT and SAT.I've had experience working with third graders all the way through continuing education students in their fifties and sixties! Part of my success includes being able to connect with the students, regardless of their age or academic level.My job as a tutor is first and foremost instilling confidence in my student, followed by reinforcing effective study skills and topping it off lastly with mastering of the content. I have received training in the Peer-led Team Learning Scheme and am familiar with other methodologies, as well.I look forward to working with you!On a side note, I'm a sport fanatic -- Football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, you name it!
