Throughout my time in this position I have had the opportunity to cover many different areas of mathematical thought and application. If there is one thing that I have noticed, it's that everyone has their own style of learning. Mathematics can invoke fear in an individual, so much so that they put their work off until the last possible second, but it is really just a matter of anxiety that prevents him or her because he or she doesn't understand the material. My approach involves applying the material based on an individual's level of understanding by integrating the subject matter with practical tasks. As we prepare ourselves for a career, it becomes more and more apparent that our employer will not give us the simple task of solving for "x". If one is able to relate specific problems to everyday life and their interest, then that problem becomes more common place and less of a burden. Everything that we learn now is simply a tool that we will aid us in the future. I'm a firm believer that everyone will eventually fall, but it's only when you brush yourself off and keep moving forward that you succeed.

I graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff with a BS in Mathematics. I moved south to Tucson and worked for over twelve years teaching Mathematics at the high school level. I am currently attending the University of Arizona working towards my MS in Statistics. In addition to teaching all grades of high school, I have also tutored from elementary to college level math. Basically, I am a math geek and love all areas of mathematics and am qualified to teach college algebra, first semester calculus, AP calculus, geometry, GRE quantitative, and undergraduate statistics.My tutoring or teaching philosophy is that it is great to know the subject material, but if you can't present it in a way that can be grasped by the student, then you are wasting your client's time. I am able to express the same information in multiple ways so it is accessible to a variety of students and learning styles. I break the material down into step by step pieces but still present math as a consistent system and not a collection of isolated facts and procedures.I am more of an intellectual than a sports person and in addition to math; I enjoy history, science, comparative religion and many forms of science fiction. I have tutored students of all ages in a range of subjects, primarily math or standardized testing related. I worked at an SAT camp for two summers, including this past summer, so I am familiar with the new SAT. I have tutored students in all the subjects on the SAT. I have also worked with elementary students on basic math and reading comprehension and early high school students on Algebra I and geometry. I love working with students to help them get to the point where they are able to stand on their own two feet; my favorite part is probably when they are confident enough in their own abilities that they no longer need me!

My interest in science dates back to childhood, and being close to NASA was always a plus. So when I reached college majoring in Biochemistry was a no-brainer for me. I also double minored in Spanish and Chemistry. Learning has always been an important part of my life due to my mother being a teacher and to this day I continue to learn as much as I can about a variety of subjects. I currently work for MD Anderson Cancer Center in their Radiation Physics department. We perform output calibrations for particle accelerators that give radiation therapy to patients. I plan on continuing my education to become a medical physicist.Although I am passionate about science and mathematics, it didn't always come easy for me. Some things made sense at first, some things just didn't. But believing that I was intelligent enough to comprehend new concepts helped me be the person I am today. No concept was too formidable and it was a matter of taking the time to properly learn it and having perseverance. I believe this applies to other aspects of life that aren't related to academics. In my free time I enjoy art in its many forms, distance running, boxing (I hope to compete this year), playing piano and cello, history, culture, and many other things.
