In the area of math, I apply my background having spent extra-curricular time in math clubs and taking classes outside of public school instruction, like number theory and history of math, to make math an interesting, rewarding and practical subject for my students. In the area of reading and writing, I am familiar with teaching and evaluation methods to identify and help reading and writing issues, including reading strategies, like reviewing and summarizing, and writing strategies, like story maps, free writing, genre writing, and voice writing. As a tutor for your child, I am committed to learning about your child's personality, interests, and learning styles, and work to make the content relevant and engaging so that your child will gain the confidence, on top of the practice to flourish in their target subjects.

I graduated from University of California, San Diego and I grew up in China. I am really addicted in Mathematics and have a lot of tutoring experience to share. I worked as a math tutor math learning center for years. I have helped students from 6 years old to 60 years old. I have helped student's grades change significantly from failing to an A. The secret is that one can never succeed in math without practice.Badminton and Piano are two of my best friends. I learned piano from the age of 3 and I can play by ear now. I was also professionally trained badminton during my high school and achieved 2nd level national athlete in China. However, the characteristic that makes me special is my experience. I left home and came to California without a penny in my pocket. I have worked from a dishwasher to math tutor, from cashier to data analyst. While I am doing the hard work as a minimum wage worker, there has been a voice telling me -- Michael, you will not end up with that, you must study as hard as you can to earn a better life. I successfully survived in California, graduated from college and I am currently working as Actuarial Analyst. What I have learned from my story is that we must cherish every opportunity to study. So, if you are interested in a polite Chinese guy with an excellent mathematical foundation, with a lot of interests, and a young man who is self-supported as a first generation immigrant who had faced and overcame difficulties, please kindly contact me.I will try my best to help you succeed in Math and won't give up.

I am currently a Junior at The King's College in Manhattan. By May of 2016, I will have completed my Bachelor of Arts in Media, Culture and the Arts, with minors in Philosophy, Theology, and Business. Throughout high school, I had various teaching experiences as a horseback riding instructor, babysitter, and ESL tutor, and after my first year of college, I spent a summer in Kenya working with children through a local orphanage. I love English, reading, writing, and math most, but I am passionate about seeing students excel in all subjects. Oddly enough, I have always enjoyed standardized tests and love seeing students become comfortable with the form. I believe that learning is almost always a matter of crafting things that we already know together into new formats, and I love coming alongside students to aid in that process. Aside from studying, babysitting, and tutoring, you can find me cooking, reading, running, and humbly trying to grow houseplants.

"Nothing is ever achieved without enthusiasm." -Ralph Waldo EmersonMy very first job in middle school was babysitting, followed shortly by volunteer work as a tutor through my school's Honor Society. I quickly grew to love working with other students, particularly in math, helping them to understand challenging material. I live for the "light bulb" moments, when my student's eyes begin to shine as he/she begins to gain confidence and mastery of the subject. In college, I earned my B.A. at Tufts University with a double major in Clinical Psychology and Child Development, and then went on to earn my M.S. at Northeastern University in Applied Behavior Analysis. As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), in my day job I primarily work with children with special needs (primarily Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, ADHD, ODD, along with other diagnoses) helping them to learn HOW to learn and to acquire the necessary pre-academic, academic, communication, social, and self-care skills needed for success and happiness. I came back to tutoring because I wanted additional work that would be meaningful and exciting to me. My passion is working with children and adolescents and helping to motivate them to learn. I work one-on-one with my clients and find our greatest success comes when I work to engage them, find what motivates them and will increase their interest in the material. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter and pets (2 dogs and 7 cats), cooking/baking, and exploring the beautiful wildlife we have here in Florida.

I currently work as a math tutor at Mathnasium: The Math Learning Center, where I've been for the past year and a half. I've also tutored German privately and had 9 years working in church youth programs. My education has been through American River College and Sierra College, with my current degree being an AS in Mathematics for Transfer.I love to be curious about everything and to spark curiosity in others through teaching. My goal is not just to have you understand something, but to be able to have fun with it, be able to sit down, play around with the pieces, and by doing that learn something new about it. Learning is exploring: as a tutor I see myself as a guide, my job is to get you excited about the topic so that you begin to ask questions and piece together the picture yourself. My interests include board games, video games, science fiction/fantasy, fiction writing, language, ballroom dance, and most anything having to do with science.

I am a certified English teacher at Cambridge High School. I hold a master's degree in English Education and bachelor's degrees in both English and Theater. I have worked as a tutor/instructor for eight years, and my experiences include tutoring ESL students in math and science, working at a theatre camp for five summers, and working at a science camp for two summers. I have also spent a great deal of time acting in various productions, directing several shows, and delivering speeches to different groups. Although I tutor in a broad variety of subjects, my passion lies in the teaching of writing, reading, drama, and public speaking. I find that the best way to engage students is by connecting what they are working on to their personal experiences. I believe that one of the main purposes to this great wealth of literature that we have at our disposal is to communicate shared experiences across the globe. When students find an engaging, practical reason to relate to what they are working on, inspiration flows and an attention to detail naturally follows. I strive to foster a sense of pride in my students; by building self-confidence, I bring out natural ability in my students that they might not know that they possess. In my free time, I enjoy reading, acting, writing, directing, cooking, and traveling.

I graduated from the University of Virginia in May 2012 (in three years) with a B.A. in Computer Science and Foreign Affairs. Now, in my day job, I do strategy work at a large Financial Services firm in the D.C. metro-area.I have a great deal of tutoring experience with people of all ages, both formally and informally. Among many experiences, I've taught SAT prep in a classroom setting, willed a friend in high school to pass his AP Physics exam by studying with him every day before practice, stayed up many a night in college meticulously editing essays for friends, and been a Big Brother (the program, that is).My philosophy around tutoring simply revolves around developing a vested interest in students' successes. I have some knowledge to share, whether it be in SAT/ACT test prep, math, writing, or college apps, and it's fun and satisfying being able to empower others to succeed. In my free time, you'll catch me on my couch (watching a lot of TV -- I'm as sharp-tongued as Lorelai Gilmore), at a pool (playing water polo), at a random sporting event (writing about it for various newspapers), or taking classes (because learning is a never-ending endeavor).

I have always enjoyed sharing knowledge with others and helping people learn to learn. Even as a young child, I loved seeing others transcend the limitations that once intimidated them, and that feeling continues to drive me today. I began tutoring in middle school when my grandmother, a retired second-grade teacher, found herself struggling to serve effectively as an algebra tutor. I put in an enthusiastic effort, and it worked out surprisingly well. Despite once “struggling in math” (this was the questionable word choice of his teachers), he eventually graduated college with a degree in mechanical engineering. Over the years, I have taught math, English, science, computer programming, and Latin. When I tutor, I am always careful to be empathetic, attentive, and flexible. I have found that communication is always improved by these habits, and I don't leave home without them. I believe I can teach any subject (even those with which I am not already familiar, given adequate time to prepare). I don't have a favorite subject to tutor; if I am able to help someone understand something that was previously incomprehensible, I'm happy. I have a degree in psychology from The Ohio State University, where I spent two years writing computerized tasks for the Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory. In my free time, I read (history, philosophy, science, economics, and whatever else winds up being relevant to whatever first grabs my attention [in other words, everything]), watch documentaries, play pool, practice guitar, and write songs.

I come from a newspapering family. My father and my uncle were both newspaper editors, and my son Joel has carried on the tradition by being a reporter for the Atlantic City Press (and marrying an editor). One thing my father taught me was that there was no such thing as a useless piece of information. Anything you might know could show up in a newspaper story you are editing. For example, what is the name of Don Quixote's horse? (It's "Rozinante"). This came across my father's desk twice in one week in stories he was editing---and both times it was misspelled. One interest my father passed on to me was Civil War history. This was useful on two occasions, once when a visiting Australia and a writer said he was interested in seeing Civil War battlefields and I took him to see the Manassas, Antietam, and Gettysburg battlefields, and once when I was asked to write an encyclopedia article on Mathematics in the Civil War.Other interests I have acquired from my father were Wild West history, American history in general, and the sciences. I, however, did not pick up his taste for detective stories (outside of Sherlock Holmes). In the first grade my father showed me how to add with carrying, and I have been interested in mathematics ever since. I did not realize how much I was interested in math until the seventh grade when I was entered in a mental arithmetic contest. I did not win, but I did well, and ever since if I don't have a calculator, or pencil and paper handy, I will do arithmetic in my head. The same year I was placed in a class which studied the "new math" rather than traditional mathematics courses. I think I was a shining example of what the new math could do. However, in college, it was disappointing to discover that everything "new" about the new math was covered in one term of my abstract algebra class.I graduated from high school on Memorial Day weekend and the following Tuesday I started my first job in a computer center. This was back in punch-card days, and my job was mainly to sort punch cards before feeding them into the computer. I have been working with computers ever since, and in addition to a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, I have a Master's degree in Computer Engineering. For fifteen years I worked for the Department of the Army. For most of that time I wrote and ran war-games on the computer (not video games, but the type of war games that would involve a long list of Army units and sometimes took months to complete). Other systems I programmed included the Army budget, personnel, and the Pentagon car pool assignments. Once when a piece of paperwork was missing, I called Personnel. The woman who answered the phone said not to worry, they had a wonderful computer program that kept track of that particular paperwork. "Ma'am," I said, "I wrote that program." (And I had.) The same day she tracked down the missing paperwork for me.My last assignment for the Army was planning office automation for the Corps of Engineers and writing the specifications for their new computers. After that I started working for a contractor with the Federal Aviation Administration. This time I was not a programmer but a software tester. I worked at the FAA's Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township, where we had computer systems that were exact duplicates of the ones air traffic controllers used in the field. Software written for the controllers was always sent to the Technical Center first for us software testers to hack away at. This was fascinating because not only did it use my years of experience in writing software, it also required me to have a detailed knowledge of just how controllers worked and what they did to control flights.I have also taught as a member of the adjunct faculty at Richard Stockton College. Courses I have taught have included Operations Research, Calculus, Statistics, and Microsoft OFFICE.Now I am retired and looking for things to do to use my years of painfully acquired computer and mathematical skills and other knowledge. Helping students learn what I learned is my answer.
