Education is one of the most powerful entities in our world. Not only should one pursue to learn more from academics, but also from cultures as well. Learning from one's interactions with others teaches us about the individual, society, and about ourselves. From my tutoring experience, I have learned that resilience and patience is key, both for the tutor and the tutored. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace; it lays in being creative and persistent when the student is discouraged. Everyone encounters a struggle at many points in their lives: education, career, family, etc. However, it is in the process of learning to overcome struggles that we find personal growth.Aside from aiding the younger generation strive for a better future, I believe that the best lesson that I can offer is to motivate students to one day contribute to society whether it is helping them research career goals or enlighten them about local or global issues for possible community service, etc. An individual alone cannot overcome the struggles that one is presented with; it is the interdependency amongst family members, friends, or strangers that helps us mitigate problems. Compassion and a helping hand is a character that I continue to value and largely shapes my career goals in attaining a Masters in Public Health.

I have a degree in Art History from the University of Minnesota and a Master's in Teaching from National-Louis University. I have taught all grade levels as a special education resource teacher and 9th grade algebra teacher. I have taught in schools in Chicago, Minneapolis, Oakland, and St. Louis. I love to tutor math (algebra especially), phonics, science, and ACT prep. I really enjoy seeing my students grow from intrepid or anxious test takers into confident and able test takers. My main goal is to improve not only the academic abilities of your child but self-esteem around academic pursuits as well. My tutoring style is work hard, play hard! We will definitely have some fun playing games or taking small breaks to get to know each other, but first and foremost we will work to improve weak academic areas. In addition to tutoring I am a certified yoga instructor. I believe that physical discipline through yoga practice better prepares the mind for mental endeavors such as test taking or test preparation. Because we live in such a busy world, yoga allows me the time to turn inward and listen to my mind and body's needs. In my spare time I enjoy camping, biking, and working in my garden.

Throughout high school I had inspirational teachers that influenced my need to enrich the lives of students. As a graduate from Stony Brook University with a Bachelors Degree in Earth and Space Science for Education, I am confident that I can utilize my knowledge to benefit the learning processes of students of various ages. I believe it is important to relate students academic and extra curricular interests to what I am tutoring, therefore we can focus on the positives! Nothing makes me happier to see a students light bulb go on after struggling with a subject! My goal as a tutor is to engage students throughout the learning process. As a self proclaimed science nerd, I believe that we should ask questions. I will encourage my students to go beyond what they are learning and ask "why" the world is the way it is!It is important to me that not only are my students gaining knowledge from me but I also learn from them. Children are our future. I find I t is imperative that we as educators teach them the fundamentals of science and math so they can grow into the thinkers that change the world!

Hi, I'm Priyanka Prasad! I'm a senior Mathematics and Economics major at Butler University. I have minors in Management Information Systems, Business Administration, and French. I've been a Math and Economics tutor throughout my time in college. These are subjects in which many students struggle during high school and college, and I find helping students to feel more confident in them to be so rewarding! In my spare time, I love to travel, learn new languages, cook, dance, and work with young people. I've done this as a freelance tutor for the past 4 years and also through mentorship opportunities through College Mentors for Kids and working as a tutor for refugees for a local school system.Over the course of the past 4 years, I have tutored over 20 high school students for an extended period of time. Many of these tutoring experiences have been specifically for test preparation. During this time, I've greatly enjoyed helping students meet their own academic goals. Of all the types of tutoring I've done over the years, I've found test preparation tutoring to be the most rewarding. Here's why: standardized tests like the SAT and ACT are often high stakes: performance on one test can have quite a large impact on a student's life. Despite this, test taking is a skill many students struggle with. Fortunately, I've found that test taking skills can be taught, and that learning them can improve student's standardized test performance dramatically. It's enjoyable to watch students develop into confident, effective test takers. It's even better to see what doors doing well on essential tests can open for them.I've also tutored 10-15 students as a supplement to in-class instruction for a specific course. Normally, I enjoy working with student on Math, Economics, Reading, and Writing. Most of the students I've tutored have seen an improvement of 2+ letter grades during the time we've worked together. When I first meet a student, I make it a point to learn about the student's interests and goals, both academic and extracurricular. Then, when the student and I are discussing the subject I am teaching them, I help the student make connections between the subject I'm teaching them to something they have a personal interest in. For example, I was recently working with an Economics student who was doing poorly in the course because she believed it was irrelevant to her life aspirations and therefore didn't apply herself to it much. Soon, I learned that my student wanted desperately to become a corporate lawyer. Once I helped her see how economic principles serve as the basis for legal systems (on both a macro and micro level), she was far more interested in Economics. This interest enabled her to exceed her expectations for her course grade by over two letter grades. As someone who has overcome my own personal struggles with lack of organization and timeliness, I have experienced firsthand what it feels like to work hard but still struggle to reach one's academic goals. Since I'm a far more organized and efficient student now than I was as a child (as evidenced by my solid college academic record), I've implemented changes in my study habits and lifestyle which truly worked. When I work with my students, I often share tips with them which worked for me to set them on the right path to academic success: This does two things: admitting that I'm not perfect either to a student takes me off a pedestal and allows me to connect with the student as their equal. Also, it provides the student motivation that they too, like me, can overcome their academic challenges.

I attended college at Rockhurst University where I received my B.S. in Mathematics. After graduating from there, I attended Saint Louis University, where I began work on my M.A. in Mathematics, which is still in progress.I began tutoring students at a private company, where I worked during my senior year of high school. While at Rockhurst, I worked in the Learning Center for two years as a tutor and as a Supplemental Instructor for one year. In addition, I had the opportunity to shadow a local high school math teacher. At SLU, I worked in their Tutoring Center for one semester and during my second semester I taught a section of College Algebra.I am able to tutor many different areas of math, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. Of these, my favorite is definitely Calculus, because I think that there are many people with misconceptions about the subject, and I enjoy showing people that there is nothing to afraid of, and that it can actually be fun!Outside of math, my hobbies include video games and watching movies. I also can be persuaded to perform some card tricks from time to time.

Hi! I'm Timmy. I look forward to working with you.I have a wide range of experiences that I think are valuable for an array of different students in need of some help. Graduating from Manhattan College in May of 2012, I received my bachelor of science in chemical engineering. In addition to that, I was a Resident Assistant for the last 2 years of my college career, which was an additional responsibility, but an invaluable experience nonetheless. Being a Resident Assistant meant counseling and creating a positive learning environment for 140+ students in 2 years. My time management and people management skills were sharpened from this time spent with strict deadlines and colorful personalities. My tutoring experience is vast because I have so much more to offer than simply a high GPA and some academic knowledge. In my experience, some of the smartest people in the world are the worst teachers, because they can't relate to the student. Whether its math, physics, chemistry, psychology, astronomy, reading or creative writing, I've experienced the ups and downs in these fields of thought and at this point I've assimilated a great deal of information. I know the feeling of hunger when I don't get some concept, and I also know that satisfying feeling of understanding the concept. I've counseled roommates over their relationship problems, I've looked into the future with students as they outline their dreams, and I've been tutored and have tutored my fellow chemical engineering classmates countless times at 4am working long into the night to understand complex concepts. My teaching style is that of the captain of a ship in the ocean. At the beginning of the tutoring session, I want to know where you are, and what you already know. Once we've established what you comprehend and what you don't comprehend, then we can go along and identify within the time we have for a particular session, where you want to go. Once the map is marked and our sail is set, and our goal is set, then we can go ahead and chart our path, and do what we need to do to achieve that goal. If you have a homework you need help on, perfect. If you have an exam to study for, perfect, show me your notes and homework and we'll go over them and I'll make new questions for you. If you have nothing, and need to start from scratch, that's fine too. I always bring my iPad and can create a lesson for you on the spot.My style is vibrant and energetic, yet calm and assuring. I will challenge you. I will not give away the answers for you; I will make you explain the concepts to me after I help you understand them more concretely. I have a magnificent imagination where I'll relate the funniest, most absurd ideas together so that a concept makes sense. Lastly, I am extremely attentive and observant to people that are around me. I will identify the language you say to me and will then know the type of learner you are, and the way you process information best. This allows me to cater the tutoring experience to you, and make you feel the most comfortable in learning what you need to learn.I am a lifelong learner. I live everyday as if it was my last, and learn everyday as if I'll live forever.

Hello,My name is Mike and I am currently a graduate student at Georgia Tech studying Prosthetics and Orthotics. My career goal is to become a certified prosthetist/orthotist, which means I would make and fit artificial limbs (prostheses) to patients who need them as well as make and fit assistive devices that support existing body parts (orthoses) to treat various conditions. One of the main reasons I am pursuing prosthetics and orthotics is because I love working with people! That is also why I became a tutor. I love helping people achieve things they want to do.One of my main objectives as a tutor is to help students understand the big picture about why whatever they are learning about matters. I have found that if you understand why you are learning something, remembering the details is much easier. Of course, part of my job is to help sort out those gritty details, and that is fun too.I have some previous experience in tutoring and teaching. As an undergraduate student, I was a tutor for the Navy ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin. Later, as a graduate student at Illinois, I spent time as a teaching assistant. In that role I held office hours, which are essentially drop-in tutoring sessions to help students in the class with whatever they needed. I have also done some teaching in a non-academic setting through coaching. I was the head coach of a Jr. High basketball team for 2 seasons and I also helped out with the high school basketball summer camp. Through coaching, I learned a lot about relating to and communicating with younger students and I loved it!In closing, I'd like to say that I've been a student all my life, including being one right now. I understand what it is like to be a student, at every level. I would love to share my knowledge, not only of specific subjects, but about being a student in general. I'm a pretty laid-back guy and I'm all about attacking things with a positive attitude. I would love to be your tutor and help you in any way I can. Thanks for reading!

I have a very extensive experience in teaching and tutoring. For 20 years I taught third grade with most years averaging mid fifth to mid seventh grade level for the entire class on standardized test scores. This includes Special Education and Learning Disability students. Some students attained post high school progress while in the third grade. When I trained other teachers, they got the same results. I was given honors by the Governor of Idaho. I have also taught abused children at a private school. Tutoring experience includes elementary Reading and Math, high school Algebra at the Houston ISD, and English as a Second Language to students and adults. Tutoring individuals or small groups is the key to success for many learners having difficulties or for learners who want to excel in success.

Everyone has the ability to learn. Finding the way to help people learn is my passion and talent! I received my first teaching certificate in 1990 from Western Oregon University and began teaching elementary school full time in 1992. While raising my 4 children, I substituted in grades PreK-12. I have experience tutoring basic skills in math and reading for ages 3-adult learners. In 2014 I received my Master's degree in Education Information Technology from Western Oregon University. I am currently a part time technology teacher in grades K-5. Finding online activities to increase learning and motivation is a big part of my job and I have a collected a vast amount of free internet resources to help students achieve their learning goals. The most effective way to tutor/teach/coach is to ask questions to help the learner think about the process needed to solve a problem or learn a skill. Relating the learning to student interests is important for motivation and understanding. For retention I find it helpful to have the student reflect on the skills they have learned by demonstrating their learning in a variety of ways.Outside teaching, I enjoy singing, camping, walking, my family, and my two beagles. I am looking forward to hearing the interests and stories of my students while tutoring.
