Education is one of those institutions that is so ubiquitous in modern society that one rarely thinks to question what its purpose might be, why it exists at all, what the world might be like without it. These questions, however, are of dire importance, and the less we think about them, the more lik...

Hello! My name is Chris and I am an experienced math and science tutor of all levels from graduate engineering to elementary school (ages 10-80). Not only do I enjoy teaching but I have a gift in relaying abstract concepts to people of all ages and backgrounds. My skills encompass (in no particular order and levels ranging from elementary school to graduate) biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, business math, and calculus I, II, and III.I have provided 5 years of private tutoring undergraduate/graduate students, a year of tutoring students in a Dallas County Community College math center for 27 hrs/wk, and 2.5 years of teaching engineering concepts to elementary and middle school kids.As a tutor, my methods work for all ages and backgrounds. I first explain concepts in a broad scope, briefly connecting them to what was talked about previously and to what will be discussed in future sections. Next, I dive into practice problems and discussions to identify strengths/weaknesses. Overall, I adjust to my student(s) needs, looking for better ways to shed light on concepts. My tutoring approach allows us to spend time wisely on the appropriate sections.I am flexible to meet online or in person! Much of my private tutoring is accomplished across Texas via Skype or Google Hangouts.I am highly experienced in math and science as both a student and a teacher. Please do not hesitate to contact me about an in-person or online tutor soon!Thank you and sincerely,Chris R.

My name is Howe. I graduated from Wesleyan University in May, and I recently moved from New York to West Philly, where I am very excited to be working with Varsity Tutors. I love being able to work with students in a one-on-one setting; for students to truly grasp difficult concepts, they must be able to discuss the material freely with their teacher, which is rarely possible in a classroom setting. For writing especially, one-on-one tutoring is essential to developing one's skills. As a Varsity Tutor, I hope to not only strengthen students' writing and academic performance, but also make them feel more confident in their ability to learn.

I am a graduate of the University of Dallas, a liberal arts school where I received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on philosophy and theater. Later, I received a Master of Arts in English from Saint Louis University where I concentrated in Medieval Literature. As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught freshman composition and literature survey courses while serving on staff at the Graduate Writing Center where I helped graduate students plan, develop, and improve their essays. For a year after college, I worked as an intern and mentor at the Midtown Center in Chicago. Midtown sponsors supplementary after-school and summertime enrichment programs for kids that foster academic growth, character development, extra-curricular interests, and athletic sportsmanship. After grad school, I worked for three years as an instructor at the Heights School, a private independent preparatory school for boys outside of Washington DC. I taught tenth grade English, US History, and AP US Government the first two years, and then I transitioned during the third year to teach 3-5 grade math and art. After that, I moved back home to St. Louis where I spent the latest chapter of my career working for McGraw-Hill, a premier worldwide provider of educational products and services that shape learning in the digital age.English is my area of expertise. I am an outstanding writer with a thorough command of English grammar, usage, vocabulary, and style. (I recently helped my mom write a book!) If you need help writing a paper, I'm your man. I also have experience and proficiency in: U.S. History and Government; World Literature; public speaking; algebra; logic; and standardized test prep.At the beginning of a first teaching session, I like to get to know the student and obtain a sense of context by asking a few questions surrounding his/her desires, challenges, goals, etc. To me, a student is to be understood and respected as a person first and foremost. From there, my method is very practical. I try to meet students where they are and help them get to where they want to be.I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!P.S. Here are a few of my favorite hobbies, interests, and miscellaneous things: running; sports; fantasy baseball; computer programming; news & politics; art & theater; logic puzzles; board games, pop music, playing old school atari/nintendo games, funny t-shirts, fish & chips, and ice-cream sandwiches....I'll stop there since you probably have other things to do....

I am a dedicated teacher because I am a dedicated learner and I strive to instill in my students that same passion for knowledge and mental exercise, all while improving the student's grades. My tutoring experience stretches back to when I was a high school student tutoring students younger than me in various math and science classes including SAT prep, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. Now, as a graduate of Boston College with a degree in mathematics and economics who has completed the premedical prerequisite courses, I hope to continue my journey as a tutor.I employ a teaching strategy of explaining important concepts, practicing problems, and reviewing mistakes. My method is to begin by finding the student's weaknesses and explaining those difficult concepts to the students. I then guide the student through practice problems and finally discuss with the student his or her mistakes and show the student how to avoid those mistakes in the future. My teaching strategy relies heavily on practice because I believe through practice, the student can fully synthesize the concepts learned in class and in the tutoring session. Guided practice also allows the student to work through problems and receive help getting past parts of problems that give them difficulty. Through this method, the student will feel more comfortable working through homework problems and answering difficult test questions.I believe that learning is about understanding important concepts, not memorizing a bunch of formulas, and that obtaining the right answer is less important than trying to understand a problem and devising a method to solve it. The ability to think critically is applicable to all facets of a student's life and academic career. I, as a tutor, hope to help the student hone that ability and apply it towards a successful academic career.I am available any day of the week and can meet at the student's home, at the library, a coffee shop, or at a park. I'm flexible and hope to make learning fun for the student. I assign optional homework assignments to provide extra practice. I go over the homework assignments if the student chooses to do them. I also offer written progress reports for parents upon request.Contact me to set up a tutoring session!

After graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in journalism and political science, I taught elementary school for two years in St. Louis with the program Teach for America. While in the classroom I received my Masters in Education from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. I now work for a STEM non-profit, combining my passion for education with my skills in public relations. My most treasured moments in the classroom happened when working individually with students, and I'm looking forward to continuing to help students learn and grow. I am most passionate about English and reading; however, I am willing and able to tutor in math and science. I am a firm believer in education of the whole child. While a correct answer is always great, learning critical thinking skills is even better. In my spare time, I exercise, read the news, and watch football.
