Let's look at education to be a conversation. The teaching is to speaking and informing, while essays are the response to what you probably heard at the initial part of the conversation. I'm a firm believer in peeling back the layers to expose sources of passion in education because learning is fun, but seeking to understand the world and your personal "why" is a more rewarding pursuit than learning because you "have to."
