When I recall impactful statements made during my education I think of a phrase a nursing school instructor of mine used to repeat: "'Why?' is the most important question. Always know your 'why'!" This advice stuck with me because it highlighted the importance of truly understanding what is being learned and be able to apply that knowledge to relevant real-world scenarios and challenges, instead of simply hearing or reading and then regurgitating information. My goal with students as a tutor is to encourage them to understand why what they are learning is important an how it applies to their lives and the lives of others, as this creates more satisfaction and fulfilment when success is achieved. This is true regardless of the study topic and can help the student visualize and connect concepts and make complex material seem more tangible. I know as well that every student is different and many require different teaching styles to better suit their particular concerns, questions and struggles in order to improve their confidence with the material. Therefore, I try to tailor my lesson plans to the individual students by asking directly what they believe they jay need the most help with and ask why that may be so. From there I hope to create student-centered relationships that promote productivity and integrity of the student in their work and testing so they may achieve their short and long term goals.
