After three years of being a civil design engineer, I have decided to take additional time off while moving from Washington to Arizona to pursue studying for my fundamentals of engineering exam to become an EIT. Taking this time off has allowed me to get back into tutoring, which was a huge passion of mine while I was in school. As a tutor in a community college environment, I got to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. I have experience tutoring arithmetic, algebra, calculus, both calculus and algebra-based physics, statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials. One of my favorite subjects to tutor was algebra because often I was working with students who were coming back to college with a memory of hating math. I made sure to take extra time and care with these students and while doing so, I got to watch as the light bulbs would go off and their dislike of math began to change. I understand that math and physics can feel like learning a new language. The concepts aren't always intuitive at first. I like to approach tutoring with patience and the ability to discuss concepts in multiple ways to try to find one that makes sense. I like to make sure the environment I have created for students feels welcoming and safe. It's ok to feel frustrated during the learning process, but I love to make sure we take time to celebrate when we make break throughs and have moments of understanding/clarity.
