Over powder puffs, red noses, and oversized green shoes in a room full of busy clowns, I fessed up to my fear. “I don't think I have a single funny bone in me, Dr. Bubby," I said to my coach. He looked at me and smiled, "Just go out there and clown around." I have never been one known for being funny or having a "clowns' disposition," but becoming a clown became one of my biggest hobbies. As a Mott Honors Clown with the official name, Tic-Tac, I was trained alongside a clown troupe of honors students to perform anti-bully shows for school-aged children. It was both nerve-wracking and cheerful; I was completely in makeup and costume as a clown on a mission to make people laugh and have a great time. Apart from clowning around at schools and hospitals, I find much joy in writing poems, essays, and short stories which gives me a medium to share my views with the world. I especially enjoy writing poems in the form of short stories, my favorite piece is titled “Onanefe; Strong Girl That Resides Within.” It is a poem that is focused on sharing my experiences from back home in Nigeria where girl education was “spat on” due to the well-known beliefs of the terrorist group known as “Boko Haram who viewed western education to be "forbidden. Apart from sharing my experiences, I used the poem to encourage young students like myself to keep on pursuing education despite the challenges they might face. My interest in writing poems became a favorite hobby after I presented it to the whole student body at our school’s talent show and won the award. So, writing poems and short stories is what I enjoy doing the most outside of my academics and clowning around. I am also a big fan of video games, movies, boy/girl bands, and sports specifically soccer. I look forward to getting to know you as well, and I hope we can have a pleasurable time as we learn.
