I have been an enthusiastic educator my entire adult life. Teaching is not what I do; it is who I am. My primary goal is to inspire my students to embrace a lifelong joy of learning. I believe that teaching and learning should be engaging, relevant and fun!
I have 15 years experience as a certified classroom teacher and 35 years experience as an outdoor educator, naturalist and guide. I have taught all ages from kindergarten to adult. I specialize in an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that
employs a wide variety of teaching techniques to provide all students with diverse learning opportunities that meet their individual needs. I emphasize inquiry based, hands on projects that provide real world exploration and application. This keeps learning engaging and relevant.
My favorite subjects are science and mathematics. In science, I especially enjoy teaching aerodynamics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, ecology and meteorology. In mathematics, I enjoy teaching numbers & operations, fractions, decimals & percents, measurement, probability & statistics, pre-algebra, algebra and geometry.
I graduated from the University of Virginia as an Interdisciplinary Major Program (IMP) Scholar with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Science, Technology and Intellectual Development. I earned my elementary and secondary teaching certification at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

I am an active outdoor enthusiast and enjoy long distance bike touring, camping, cross country skiing, canoeing, fly fishing and most of all, paragliding! As a mountaineer in Alaska in the 1980's, I helped pioneer the development of the new sport of paragliding. I became one of the first certified instructors in the country and paragliding has become a life long passion. I have also worked as an outdoor educator, naturalist and guide for 35 years. This includes working as a ski instructor and glacier guide, as well as an advanced paragliding instructor. I worked at the REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) in Anchorage, Alaska for 16 years promoting an active outdoor lifestyle and educating customers on outdoor gear and equipment. I love the outdoors! My favorite indoor sport is chess. I started playing as a young boy and enjoyed going to chess tournaments with my father and competing against adults. As teacher, I founded chess clubs at three different schools in Alaska. I enjoy teaching chess to students of all ages.
