I am a graduate of Mary Baldwin College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology also focusing on philosophy and religion. Since graduation I became a registered behavior technician and provided ABA therapy to children with autism spectrum disorder. After several years of this work I went back to school to become a licensed special education teacher. I obtained this certification through the University of Virginia at Wise.
I am most passionate about reading and life skill instruction. In my college courses and professional development I have learned several skills to help struggling readers make gains in the areas of reading comprehension and decoding. I have also passed the Reading for Virginia Educators Praxis which covers a variety of reading topics and reading instruction strategies. I firmly believe that having my students focus on short term gains and not perfection, helps boost their confidence as readers as well as makes this necessary skill more enjoyable for them.
In my spare time I enjoy camping and reading mystery novels.
