I have over 200 hours of volunteer and observation time in middle and high school classrooms. Over 150 hours of volunteer effort were in a 7th grade classroom. The student interactions were mostly to help in-class practice time with individuals or pairs. I also helped by taking small groups aside, typically one to three, who had missed class or quizzes to help them catch up and to improve the teacher's time efficiency. At the middle school, I volunteered afterschool with English Language Learners (ELL or ESL). The observations were divided among two high schools and another middle school. There were interactive opportunities. These observations were part of an educational program with the University of Minnesota. My work background is being an electrical engineer developing consumer electronics such as disk drives. My home is usually in an electronics lab to help with product development needs such as failure analysis, applications, and reliability. This has improved my problem solving approaches.
I have over 15 years experience tutoring math, primarily Algebra 1 and 2. I prefer to use question and answer type practice. Each student is individually approached so as to assess content skill, classroom engagement, or other needs. I am passionate about helping students to learn, apply, and retain mathematical skills. While I have a good handle on math content, a great strength of mine is having patience to ask and "re-ask" to get a student to communicate understanding. There is obviously a problem to work on 'now', but I don't dwell on learning only a recipe.
You or your student will find me engaging and earnest. Tutoring is a calling for me. Your time and your designs for success are important to me.
