Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

The student's learning style is unique in every student, and the best way to reach that student's full potential is to help them discover their learning style so that the student himself/herself can achieve without anxiety.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would figure out their areas of struggle within the topic as well as create a plan of action for tackling the areas of struggle in a timely manner.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By helping him/her discover the best way he/she learns and helping him/her apply this learning style independently to achieve success without aid.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By incentivizing the tutoring sessions, and by making the sessions fun and, therefore, easy to grasp.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Slow down the review, and try to figure out a way that the student can best retain the difficult topic.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By going through the story piece by piece and annotating as much as possible to locate information useful in answering the questions that follow.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Applying different learning styles to see which one fits the student best.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By creating rhymes, games, or relatable stories to help the student remember the information without being bored.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Providing short assessments to test the student's knowledge of the material. Another possibility would be asking the student to recite the information if the subject were history, Spanish, or government.
