What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students have the ability to learn, and by helping students reach their full potential, they will become lifelong learners. This is important so they can promote active citizenship throughout their entire life. Teachers should be student-centered and aim to support a student's learning in the way the student will become most successful.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I think it is important to establish a relationship with students and to find common ground. It is also important to assess the student's background knowledge, so a tutor can build on the knowledge they already know and make it relevant to the student. Finally, I think that a tutor should explicitly go over with the student how the tutor sessions will go (make a schedule of tutoring sessions) to incorporate both learning as well as educational games that promote the learning and to have a set plan the student can look forward to each session.
