How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I believe that it is important for a student to have an interest in the subject he or she is studying, even if there is a struggle. I would help promote enthusiasm in the subject, all while we work on understanding the concepts.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I like to reinforce the material by having the student teach back to me the concepts. If you fully understand the material, you should be able to teach it to someone else.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would do practice problems with the student, or give them a practice test or game. The more they practice, the more they begin to understand the material. As the problems get harder, I would praise the student for doing such a great job.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
When first starting with a new student, I like to figure out what he or she understands and how he or she learns. Every student is different. From there, I can build up a plan on how to best tutor them and fulfill what is needed.
