What is your teaching philosophy?
I want to help empower you to figure out how your learning style affects your ability to learn and then help you determine your best practices for learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
My goal in the first session is to get to know you and what your goals are. Until I know these, my ability to help is only superficial.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
It all starts with knowing your learning style.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
You have got to find out what motivates them and then work a plan around that motivation.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Ask them to explain to me how they are trying to learn or solve so that I can understand where they are coming from first.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Often this is a learning style issue and so I would have them read out loud to see if being more active helps with the comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Learn about them and then teach them about successful study skills and time management.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find a subject matter that interests them and then relate the study material to that.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Follow up questions and mini tests.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Praise on everything from getting it right to just making progress, no matter how small.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Ask them and their parents lots of questions to understand their needs.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I will try to understand their learning style, what interests them, and what motivates them to develop a plan for them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Depends on the student.
