Hello, I am a full-time systems/electrical Engineering student at the University of Arizona. When I was younger I struggled with my studies in topics like math, English, and reading. I was not confident in my ability to do my school work and it really affected my confidence. As I grew older I started to develop a keen passion for learning and my grades started to improve. I began seeing tutors and accessing different academic aid tools to help improve my grades and most importantly my confidence. Now, as a full-time Engineering student, I feel it is my turn to give back and help instill the same confidence that I lacked when I first began my educational journey. When we help each other succeed, we all succeed!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

A good tutor is able to communicate a concept clearly. A great tutor is able to communicate that same concept in multiple ways in order to adapt to the student’s learning style. Be a great Tutor.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Assess their strengths and weakness so that I will have a better understanding of where they do and do not need help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them how to teach themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Stay positive, keep up their moral, and stay engaged.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Communicate with them in a friendly manner, and really understand what it is that they are not understanding.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would advise the student to break the reading up into chunks; at the end of every second page, ask them to write down a summary of what they just read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Just talk to them on a personal level, get to know them a little bit, and get a better understanding of the type of person/learner that they are.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I typically like to build confidence in my students by challenging them with material that they feel comfortable and have a good understanding of. I find that the majority of people get an intrinsic feeling of confidence and accomplishment when they get something "right."

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask and challenge them with material on a concept that is utilized multiple different ways.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice, positive reinforcement and encouragement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

First ask what the student feels they need more work on, and challenge them with material that I notice they need more help on.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It all boils down to communication; once you understand what a student needs, you can apply a range of different techniques to help the student better understand their material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Materials that are given in their class are typically the most helpful and relevant, however I have used online sources that have proven to be very helpful as well.
