What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that the goal of teaching should be not only to educate a student in the desired subject matter, but also to equip the student with the skills to utilize the newly acquired information. Teaching should be informative, but it should also be fun for the student. It is very important for the student to feel comfortable with learning and to enjoy it as well.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to talk with the student at first to get an idea of where they are in a certain subject. I also want to find out what their goals are in regard to the tutoring sessions. I will also ask them to tell me about how they learn the most effectively. This is very important, especially when it comes to students trying to improve their proficiency in a foreign language.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I am very enthusiastic about the subjects that I am available to tutor in, and I hope that my own enthusiasm would help a student to become excited to learn. I also like to find ways a student can apply their knowledge of a certain subject to something practical in real life. If a student knows that what they're learning has some practical usage, then they might be more interested in it.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I tend to bring worksheets (some of which I have made) to the session for the student to work off of. I also bring any relevant word lists and charts for the student to reference.
