Tutoring review by Katherine in Boulder, CO
The student and I met today because I will be out of town this Friday.  The session went well.  I introduced the course and homework formats to her.  We then did the introduction to critical reading looking at the three questions: purpose, central idea, and structure.  We spoke about the three different purposes: analysis, argument, and narrative.  We worked a lot on paraphrasing and having the right attitude toward the passages since that is something that she struggles with in general.  It went well.  We also talked about vocabulary study strategies.  She is very motivated right now even though she is pretty tired after school.

The student has a Calculus quiz tomorrow, so we spent tonight's session preparing for it. We began by reviewing some homework on finding derivatives numerically and analytically, after which I went over another problem set he had done on his own with only trivial mistakes. I concluded with a brief study drill consisting of freshly-created practice problems incorporating all of the concepts which will be on the quiz. The student performed flawlessly on this review, leading me to believe that he is sufficiently prepared for the quiz.

The student and I began today with some reading comprehension. This particular passage was taken from a practice test. She read the first half of the passage and I asked her several comprehension/inference/prediction questions. Then she read the remainder of the passage, we discussed it, and she answered some multiple-choice comprehension questions. She did a great job with this one! Then we moved on to a non-fiction reading passage, which was a bit more of a challenge for her, but after talking through some of the details she did a great job answering comprehension/extension questions. We spent the second half of the session on multiplication practice, including a timed test and some practice reciting facts aloud to help with memorization. She is making progress and will continue to do so with our continued practice!

To begin, we went over the practice questions from the ISEE manual.  He did very well on the algebraic concepts in the math section. We went through about 4 reading passages.  I explained how to prove his answers and how to identify the main purpose of the passage.  Then, we practiced the vocabulary section.  He was able to identify many of the stems and prefixes.  We also talked about identifying parts of the words that he had maybe heard before.  Lastly, we discussed the fill in the blank sentences.  He did very well at using the strategies we discussed on Monday.

The student's lowest area was critical reading, so we started out with sentence completions. Then, we discussed the first math section he had done previously. After that, we practiced reading passage strategies and then did another math section. The session went well. He was alert and processing information throughout. :-)

Tonight we spent time reviewing the student's French vocabulary. We also practiced the body parts again. The student can successfully point to the part when I ask "ou est le nez?" (where is the nose?). We spent some time playing a 'catch the ball counting game.' During the second half of the session, I guided him in writing numerals.  We worked on numbers 2 - 11.  He is improving in his identification of the number as well as writing the number and loves transferring back in forth between saying the number in French then English, English then French.  For example, he says trois, that's three in English.
