Tutoring review by Christopher in West Haverstraw, NY
The students and I spent the session getting to know each other, going over their homework and relevant practice problems. The first student and I were able to go through his math homework for the day. He is good at solving math problems, but sometimes doesn't write down his work. As I work with him more and get to know him better, I will push him to do a better job showing his work. The first student and I ended with some multiplication tables. I began timing him but he rushed and made some errors, so I encouraged him to take his time and look over his tables once he had completed them. I hope to continue to encourage him to do things like this. The second student and I worked on addition and subtraction problems. I encouraged him to go from right to left. We also worked with fractions. I think that more work on multiplication tables, arithmetic and fractions will be good for him. The third student did a good job on her homework. She had a good grasp of multiplying fractions. She wasn't as sure about comparing fractions with different denominators and finding common denominators, so we worked on that and she ended up seeming pretty confident by the end of the session. We also worked on multiplication tables. She seems to know them. She did well.

Today we reviewed the student's homework from the previous session on algebraic expressions. Then we completed a lesson on exponents including equations that require creating common bases. I gave him practice problems for homework that will reinforce our exponent lesson. Lastly, we completed practice problems from an ACT exam. We completed about 30 problems. About half of these we completed in a timed fashion and it was clear that timing adds pressure on him and may impact his performance. Timing is something I will focus on in sessions going forward. Of note in this problem set, we reviewed the distance formula and writing equations of a circle.

* The student reviewed his vocab list, choosing the correct word for the sentence, then creating a personal sentence with the remaining word. * He matched the vocab words with antonyms and/ or synonyms. * I introduced him to "The Treasure Tree" book. At first he thought it "tacky" due to the pictures, but as we began reading it, he was intrigued. * He states that school is going well, that the homework is not much of a challenge.

We continued the student's lab. We made graphs from an Excel datasheet, comparing the power of a jump to the power to climb stairs, and the distance of a horizontal jump to the distance of a vertical jump. We had to make some questionable approximations from the data we were given, but he is pretty capable and was able to follow what we did.

We worked through a lot of different Calc concepts, specifically on implicit differentiation and linear approximation. The student did well with the practice. We went through the concepts slowly, and then she did some practice problems.
