Test Prep Tutoring review by Sally in Duluth, GA
The student seems to be picking up the new grammar material fairly quickly. The mechanics questions he missed on the most recent homework were almost all punctuation questions. He also seems to have some difficulty with the English rhetoric questions. We talked a little bit about strategies for the science section, and we worked some more on his prose reading skills. This seems to be the largest area of concern at this point. I think with practice he will be able to do much better. Talking through the questions, he understood how to pick out the right answer based on text evidence.

I gave the student a basic overview of concepts covered on the science test, the kinds of questions asked, and specific test-taking strategies. Then I gave her several practice drills that included each type of science question.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Andrew in Duluth, GA
We reviewed remainder of science practice test from last week and identified strategies and shortcuts. We then worked on building vocabulary using images and word associations, which student 1 and student 2 said they enjoyed. I left them with 10 core words and words associated with these, as well as a vocab builder worksheet. We finished with a partial completion of an English practice test, identifying common question and sentence archetypes, and drilling reading techniques.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Brianna in Duluth, GA
The student and I went over a diagnostic test to get a feel for where she's at. Her original test score was a 27, with the lowest score in science. She would like to raise her composite score as much as possible. We will be focusing on math, as a review of concepts is needed. Her reading score is excellent, so that is the only area we will not work, though science-based reading homework will be assigned.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Matthew in Duluth, GA
The student and I met for our first session, and began by doing a little bit of diagnostics so that I could get a better sense of his skills and capabilities. He showed me the practice problems that he'd been working on, all in a test prep book. For the most part, his mathematics were solid, and he only struggled with a few problems, all involving the same type of issue: proportional relationships in algebra problems. Once I showed him what types of clues to look for (i.e., which variables in the formula related to which numbers), he was able to work his way through the remaining practice problems successfully. Then, we turned to the verbal work, which was his self-stated weakness. He and I read an essay prompt, and then I had him write a practice essay. The end of our session focused on reading through his essay and making any grammatical edits, and a few quick analogy problems with vocabulary.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Chrysa in Duluth, GA
Today was my first session with this student. We talked about the format of the test and some basic testing strategies related to scoring. We then went over the entirety of the cell portion of the test: cell theory, microscopes, cell structure and function, and membranes. He showed a deep understanding of the material and answered most questions correctly. I am excited to see how he will perform on practice tests in the future and I am confident he will do well in understanding more complex material.
